These were guys dominating the news when I was young - Lansky, Luciano, Siegel, Gotti, etc. And the group known as Murder Incorporated.
Where are their counterparts today?
When reports claim Trump (because he was engaged in construction and real estate in NYC) inevitably had dealings with 'the mob,' just what is meant?

(3,433 posts)Either through membership or leadership. The thought is that given the timeframe when Trump was building his casinos and business empire, it is likely that the mafia could have leveraged him to use their laborers and companies.
So what is the response? Do you capitulate and agree or deal with work stoppages, interruption, intimidation levied against you, your family or those companies who chose to work with you. What happens then is you start to lose support as people fear for their own and their families safety.
I can hate Trump without looking at this for a reason.

(12,858 posts)Just watched videos of Carlo Gambino and Genovese family. Kinda weird and bit scary the families are still going strong.
Although I grew up in Ok, I only recently learned about the big mob presence in Hot Springs Arkansas. Thought mob was NYC, east coast cities, Chicago. Not my part of country!
Heard that when race tracks opened in OK a few yrs ago, tracks were only approved if they gave control of the concessions system to the mob. They had gotten to the state group(s) granting licenses. And some claim OK is out of the mainstream!

Organized crime is everywhere and these days it is far more than the stereotypical Italian families.

(12,858 posts)Remember reading magazine (Life? Look?) stories as a young teen about big meeting of gang bosses somewhere on east coast. Complete with pics of buildings and many cars in parking lot.

(3,433 posts)There is no such thing as the mafia. Just businessmen and community leaders.

(64,425 posts)A few stragglers, but mostly the mob has reverted to street thugs, at least in the last couple decades. That's why "it" needed to pal up with the Russian mob.
The RICO stings of the 80's and 90's, plus the utter incompetence of Gotti pretty much destroyed organized crime as you recall it.

(62,444 posts)None of it ever looked "organized".

(64,425 posts)That's what J Edgar said too. LOL! Right about the time a bunch of 'em became the equivalent of a billionaire by staying "organized".
BTW: Bank robbery in my little town last week. Guys were efficient. They were in and out in under a minute. Not sure how much they got. Probably not that much as the reward for information was only a grand.

(62,444 posts)My hazy memory was that it was a mobster who was asked about whether he had any knowledge of organized crime, and maybe was in the Kefauver hearings. But I gave up after, oh, 45 seconds of research.

The original gangster movies with James Cagney and EG Robinson took a big hit when the Hays Code started in 1934. [link:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-Code_crime_films| A group known as the Legion of Decency felt that they glorified crime. They didn't make a come back until the 1940s.
Also, TV shows like The FBI, Dragnet were a source of true crime dramas. There were also fiction crime dramas on TV.
I used to watch shows about the mafia all the time on A&E, Biography Channel, Discovery and Court TV.
