If they are not too far gone, there is a lot to be said for nonviolent resistance. I remember being a little girl and watching the civil rights struggles on the television. The dignity and courage with which people faced beatings, dogs and hoses swayed many white people. Maybe it didn't sway the most deplorable, but it opened the hearts of many others who might otherwise not have chosen a side.

I politely told him I do not care who he voted for and will happily hire a republican. But since he chose to politicize his business I will too and cannot hire him. He was surprised but did not become rude. Shook his head and he left.

Found my courage, pulled out the chain saw and dropped the tree myself.

Change his mind...of course not. But I certainly made him realize that not all white guys in his economic class agree with him.
