(4,429 posts)I hope so. I'd love to see an interview from her in 5 years, when she has some perspective.
OTOH, her mother didn't look like the most 'upright' of people (with her middle finger extended). I swear sometimes. But my 15 year old would be horrified if I were on social media looking like that. I would embarrass her!

(30,151 posts)Barbers mother, Jill Barbera told the Daily Mail she forced her daughter to move out last year because she is disrespectful. A family friend told Heavy that Barbera and her daughter havent had a relationship since then.
Even though I made her move out in mid December 2016 due to her lack of respect for everyone and everything and refusal to get treatment for same, I did attempt to reach out to her today but there was no answer, Barbera told the Daily Mail. I am saddened, shocked, mortified and devastated by her horrific display of racism and hatred on social media. I respect that an apology will never fix the damage she has done, however as her mother I am truly sorry for everyone negatively affected by her actions. She was not raised to act this way nor was this type of behavior or disrespect condoned in the home she was raised in for 18 years.

There are plenty of her former schoolmates in those Greek organizations who hold equally repugnant attitudes about minorities and poor people. The difference is they don't broadcast them to the world in viral social media and become a public relations nightmare for a multi-million dollar business. And it's not just the university environment. Even Roy Moore's followers in that notorious "Jew lawyer" clip revealed that most of them wanted to hear Moore had Jewish supporters and were let down when it turned out to be a joke.
Bigotry and racism are still bad words to most people, including conservatives.
Now, if we can get people to understand political bigotry is every bit as real and comes from the exact same place as all other kinds...

How clueless does one have to be to do something THAT dumb? Was alcohol involved in that second video? It sounds like it which means she probably was engaged in underaged drinking. Oh, and as Don Coquixote said below, it's not just horseshit to blame racism on bipolar disorder. It's actually offensive, insulting, and degrading to the tens of thousands of people who live with it, cope with it, manage it, and don't turn in to spoiled, bigoted little shits like the white privileged brat in question here. (22,976 posts)I'm not a head-doc, but I've dealt first-person with someone a few years back who suffered from bipolar disorder. It is shocking to hear someone who seemed adjusted and balanced suddenly start in with all sorts of weird profanity and yes, racial/ethnic slurs -- anything that is instantly offensive and self-destructive.
Just an utter, complete absence of judgment or "filter" -- a stream of disjointed epithets and slurs. It's like a speeding car with no braking system. That she may have been drinking would only increase the load on an already overworked faulty mechanism.
I hope that this young woman gets a psychiatric evaluation and proper treatment, if indeed she is ill.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Considering that this documentation will be attached to her name for life, for all potential employers to check out for instance, being able to explain a diagnosis and treatment might help her a lot.
Speaking of, given the potential devastating impacts on lives, it seems as if some legal remedy will be needed to limit access. Such as if this young woman eventually went to court, demonstrated this did not represent the person she now was, and requested a court order. We'd need an electronic process to at least mostly do it also.
VOX
(22,976 posts)By all appearances, if you spoke one-on-one with this young man, youd get the idea that hes well-spoken, presentable, bright, engaging, and as far as one could be from any psych-health issues. He had an intelligent, attractive wife and a beautiful baby son by her. A nice situation that called for responsibility, living in moderation, and possessing the will to maintain the family and home.
And yet in one of his up moods, he latched onto the very foolish idea to sell drugs (lots of them) all over the state, to make some quick money (why get a job, when you feel so good?). His mode of transport and delivery was a RED vehicle (because, when youre on top of the world, who would notice?). He was busted in short order, but lucked out with a soft sentence.
But, true to his BPD, he goes and does it ALL again; this time out of state. Busted again swiftly, and as a repeat offender, got a 5-year-term in a Midwest correctional facility.
His wife wisely left him, taking custody of the son, and moved across the country. Hes now a convicted felon whos done jail time, and I doesnt have any money or prospects (whos going to hire a felon?). Even claiming diminished capacity because of the BPD is too late for him. What a complete and utter waste.
ProfessorGAC
(64,817 posts)My wife has had BPD for nearly 30 years. No such behaviors as you suggest have ever been manifest with her. Now, she is properly mediated and is diligent and persistent in taking those prescriptions. And while there have been times when she did manifest some of the behaviors associated with that illness, nothing close to this type of thing, nor the lack of filter attributable to the illness have ever been witnessed by me, and i've been there the whole 30+ years.
VOX
(22,976 posts)And by no means am I implying that all BPD individuals say/do outlandish things. Some merely cannot sleep in a healthy cycle, or worry excessively, etc.
But in some severely affected individuals, the disorder can cause them, through impaired judgment, to engage in (per the NIH) risky behaviors, such as excessive spending or hypersexuality. The young New Jersey student at the University of Alabama completely destroyed her personal, social and academic standing by her lack of impulse control.
I came across another recent case of a woman with BPD posting racist content on social media:

The Internet Branded Her a Racist. Does It Matter That Shes Bipolar?
SevenDaysVermont.com
By Sasha Goldstein Jan 20, 2017
It all started last week when Heather Wick logged onto her now-deleted Facebook page and wrote: Do you think Trump will bring back slavery? I could use a maid.
Reaction was swift as the post went viral. The 44-year-old Burlington woman says she has been deluged with death threats, upward of 300 per hour.
<snip>
Whats not apparent online: Wick is bipolar and was likely in the midst of a manic episode. She says she was diagnosed in 1997 while attending Albany Medical College. Yes, she did graduate. But she never finished residency. One year in, she quit.
I had to leave because I was still sick with bipolar disorder and working 120 hours a week was detrimental to my health, Wick told Seven Days.
Between 1998 and 2007, I was hospitalized five times for bipolar disorder, she added. I have had the same psychiatrist since 2000 and it took eight years to get on a medication regimen that works for me. I have ups and downs, but havent had to be hospitalized since 2007. Wick didnt use her mental illness as an excuse for what she posted on Facebook. In fact, she said, just the opposite.
<snip>
People may end up doing a lot of high risk activities that they later regret and that have painful consequences, Rettew continued. They can say things they dont believe, they can spend money they dont have, they can become more promiscuous. A lot of mistakes are made when people are manic.

(4,818 posts)This has all the self-destructive earmarks of bi-polar in my layman's opinion.
I had a friend who systematically destroyed her career in academia over a number of years due to undiagnosed bipolar disorder.
What was more vexing is that she'd lost her mother to it and refused to address the issue until it was too late for her fix the situation.
She survived the process, but too many bridges were burned for her to recover. Thankfully she was able to move on.

But this particular drunken racist shithead from New Jersey really did a thorough and swift job of torpedoing her own life in numerous areas, all at once. Its like a form of half-suicide. Shes now earned her standing as an outcast, and will be one for some time. Such wide-swinging, self-destructive behaviors are often the signals of deeper trouble than mere boozy stupidity.
As for drinking, the bipolar-support site BPHope states that it spells trouble for BPD sufferers: https://www.bphope.com/bipolar-alcohol-decision-drink/
Sober Consideration: Bipolar, Alcohol & the Decision to Drink The standard advice about drinking when you have bipolar is to avoid alcohol altogether...

It really looks like that is a possibility here. She was speaking very clearly and could not have been so drunk she completely forgot how people "like her" behave. She didn't just break a big rule, she practically used the violation as a pom-pom as she loudly cheered breaking it to as many people as possible.
Although bipolar's been talked about here, something else could be that "deeper trouble." And again, being a racist shithead is not protection against mental disorder. Both can, in fact, be symptoms of some serious personality disorders.
(Not that I'm suggesting PD here. If this girl had a personality disorder that caused that behavior she'd never have made into that sorority. They're disorders because destructive behaviors are not turn-on/turn-off. Although, it is possible to have a PD AND other mental problems.)
You know, the antiintellectualism and punitive attitudes pushed by some on the right have stifled discussion of mental disorders that strongly affect behaviors. That type wants people who break the law strongly punished, not treated. But mental disorders and disturbances are very common. I've only read some on this subject, but every time I did memories of people I've known popped up, along with the "oh!" of beginnings of insight.

(4,490 posts)Please stop making "mental health" excuses for this girl. I'm bipolar myself, and find this sort of speculation to excuse racism insulting.
That is for the multiple people calling her bipolar. Being a drunk millenial racist with bad fashion sense does not make her bi-polar. As for the video, she's young. There's an excessive amount of live streaming, tweeting, taking selfies, etc. and posting that shit for the world to see. Lots out there will publically post things that would have been private in the past. It's just a common social media problem.
Downtown Hound
(12,618 posts)I dated a girl with bipolar disorder. A few times she didn't take her meds and whoa, look out. Massive amount of crazy. But one thing she was not was a racist, and even in the midst of her worst outbreaks, she never resorted to making wild racist rants. Bipolar disorder does not suddenly make you racist. It may remove filters that a racist may have otherwise learned to develop, but it doesn't magically make you a racist.
Blaming this girls behavior on bipolar disorder is just another form of excusing her behavoir and another form of white privlege.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)BUT, could there possibly be such a thing as someone who is both profoundly racist AND "bipolar?"
Surely bipolar disorder doesn't preclude racism...?
The idea isn't that bipolar swings create racism but that, where it exists, emotions arising from hostile biases might become more freely expressed.

Personally, amid all the righteous flaming of this stranger by strangers, I felt that pointing out that we should hold judgment because there might be factors involved that we don't know about was a good thing.
