Have YOU ever spoken with a Dreamer?

Last edited Thu Jan 18, 2018, 02:33 AM - Edit history (1)

I have spoken with Dreamers about this issue and I have heard some speak at a rally last Sept. I was in tears. Too bad those in the WH haven't chosen to have this experience before making decisions for about 1 million Dreamers. The Kelly/Miller clone HSS Nielsen never has. She was chastised by Cory Booker yesterday when she lied to the Senate Jud. Committee.
Call your reps to support the Dreamers and a Clean Dreamer Act. It takes 3 minutes. I called mine today. They are Dems but we need to encourage all of them and thank them too.

There are 800k of them, from high school to their 30s in age. I've dealt with upwards of 1300 high school students, many Latino and many immigrants.

Nobody feels obliged to tell me their status: citizen, legal immigrant, not legal immigrant and if not legal whether they're included in DACA or not.

there is a large local Hispanic community that I deal with regularly on several levels.

Forget the gangs and criminals-- they are a tiny portion of our Hispanics, who are hard working, talented, honest, and friendly people. The kind you want as workers, neighbors, and business owners. Dreamers and others, they are helping make this place greater, just like every other immigrant group has.

We made a promise to these people, and even though it did have a time limit a promise is still a promise and time limits tend to disappear as times change.

What we are doing to them might be barely legal, but it is immoral and disgusting. It is America at its worst.

When I became a teacher the law had just changed and it was required that ALL teachers go back and take classes and tests to get a degree to teach students from all cultures and languages in the classroom. We were taught to preserve individual cultures and the "melting pot" idea was no longer the attitude of the country. What the Hell happened since then? That was only 20 years ago.

Seriously...there's no way to know if someone is a dreamer or not, unless they tell you.

I know one very well. She grew up in our social circle as one of my daughter’s friends.

I’ve met others at an event, but that was casually and not the same.

But in these times I pray for them every single night. The bravery of those who go public as Dreamers, knowing they could be identified, stuns me. Absolutely stuns and humbles me. They are incredible people whom this country should be proud to welcome with open arms.

I can't imagine the existential fear they are going through right now. If I were suddenly told "Hey, guess what--you have to go to a country you have no memory of, with no family to support you, no social assistance, and you don't speak the language"....

Someone somewhere is going to commit suicide over this, if it hasn't happened already, and it makes me sick to my core.

One in particular sticks out in my mind. She was brought to the U.S. at age four. She has no life in Mexico. Her children were born here, and are American citizens. If she were to be sent back to a life where she knows no one, her kids would not be entitled to an education in Mexico.

I hate Trump.

I have known my now son-in-law since he was in the 6th grade, (he is 28 now). Here is his story.

His parents came here legally for school. While here they had two kids. Then they went back to Venezuela. My SiL was born then. A few years later they moved back to the US, still legally, had a work permit. His parent's and grand parents are all naturalized US citizens now. They can vote! Have been since 2012, well except his mom, she didn't become US citizen until 2014. Which is fine cause she was supporting mitt, her hubby voted Obama! However in 2016 they both voted for Hillary.

Now my SiL is a Dreamer. All was fine until he turned 18. Sadly for him things beyond his control happened. The immigration rules changed and he was going to have to back to Venezuela get paperwork and then try to re-enter the US. But Venezuela had Chavez making W mad, then he dies and everything spiraled out of control there. Going back and re-entering was NOT a good idea.

He is the only one in his family not a US citizen. His two siblings were born here. His parents and grand parents all became naturalized citizens. It took them 20 years.

Then Obama did DACA. My SiL applied the first day it was open. He dated my daughter in High school. They broke up, remained good friends. Two years later they started dating again and have been together ever since. He didn't want to marry my daughter until he had his immigration status fixed. He didn't want people to think they were marring so he could be US citizen.

When orange fuck started messing with DACA everything changed. It was hard enough getting renewal of his work permit before orange fuck. He was let go at his job when his first permit expired. He re-applied months ahead of the expiration date. He wasn't re-approved for 2 months after the expiration date. So he was laid off from work, lost his drivers license and could be deported.

When he got his renewed permit he got his job back and all was cool. But this not knowing one day from the next with orange fuck pushed him over the edge. They got married in the court house by a justice of the peace in Nov 2017. We will have a real wedding Nov 2018 so us parents can attend.

I hate orange fuck! Because of him I wasn't able to attend my daughter's wedding.

Thank you for verifying how fucked up this is on so many levels. There was a guy who recently got deported after living here and raising a family here and he doesn't even speak Spanish. He missed some random birth date/cut-off year by one year and due to confusing paper work and ever changing rules is the system he was "caught" by ICE.

You don't do these things to good, hardworking, law abiding, taxpaying people with families and careers. This is a travesty of justice. The GOP and crazy fake prez are making people suffer needlessly. The moron changes his mind every other second...insane and evil!
