Trump Supporters (NY Times)

Today, the NY Times published letters from Trump supporters on their opinion page. The one thing that stands out is that they still think he is doing a great job. In my opinion, although they are self-proclaimed highly-educated people, they seem to be very uninformed about a lot of crucial issues? We can only guess why that would be?

For example, the first letter states. "Donald Trump has succeeded where Barack Obama failed. The economy is up, foreign tyrants are afraid, ISIS has lost most of its territory, our embassy will be moved to Jerusalem and tax reform is accomplished." Does he not realize that the economy has been growing under Barack Obama since the Great Recession of 2008? Does he think that did not happen? Or that it was not really that severe? And every President in recent times has talked of moving the embassy to Jerusalem. And "foreign tyrants are afraid"? They emulate Donald Trump. Look at their comments about "fake news" and how many of them have cracked down on journalists. That is not good for a democracy.

Another writer sort of echoed the same praises as the first. He said, "I voted against Hillary Clinton more than I voted for Donald Trump. That said, President Trump has exceeded my wildest expectations. Yes, he is embarrassing. Yes, he picks unnecessary fights. But he also pushed tax reform through, has largely defeated ISIS in Iraq, has named a number of solid conservative judges..."etc. Yes he picks unnecessary fights and he is embarrassing, we can all agree. But to believe that the taxcuts were for anyone but the wealthy and that the deficits are not primed to reach dangerous levels not seen before, is proof positive of very high naivete.

Another strong supporter of Donald Trump states that "Opinion polls give Mr. Trump a low rating, and I would, too, for character, personality and temperament. But I would give him high marks for policies and programs that are stimulating the private sector, which, after all, pays the bills for the Democrats’ extravagant welfare programs." We should note that character is destiny and that if someone does not have character, they cannot succeed as the leader of anything, let alone the President of the United States.

One lady supporter seems to agree with Donald Trump that the "media is the enemy of the people"? She says, "Much of the media, as the hotbed of hatred against Mr. Trump, has pushed me more toward him than his social behavior has done the opposite." Do not depend on this person to help save our democracy.

Still another says, "I am proud when I see the First Couple representing us on the world stage. Tens of millions of thoughtful, compassionate Americans agree with me." Has he not read about the porn star that was paid $130,000 just before the election to stay silent? Are we sure we want this representing us on the "world stage"?

Another supporter who brags about his degrees and educational accomplishments says this: "Now volatility is our friend. The more chaos, the better! Entrepreneurship up. Optimism up. Good old American problem solving is back! You know who loves change? Capitalists. Mr. Trump has led us on that spiritual exodus." Does he think capitalism is some sort of spiritual exodus?

And so forth and so forth....

For me personally, anyone that can overlook such a lack of character and such dishonorable traits for any policy or political agenda is severely lacking in human empathy and intelligence.

1. Interesting. These are not the typical poorly educated white guys. They're Times readers.

They seem to be the highly educated, big city professionals they claim to be, and they're all in for conservative economics and judiciary. In other words, they are relatively wealthy people who agree with Republican ideology, though probably not the evangelical Christian stuff. They're pro business from a right wing perspective. They may even be culturally liberal, explaining why some have called themselves Democrats, but they are classically conservative in worldview ... the type that once defined the Republican party.

2. But they seem quite selective in the information they gather.

They have not yet seen anything unacceptable.
