Trump will give healthcare workers the right to refuse to treat LGBT people

What was it he said? "The best friend you will ever have"? Not in this life ... that I can tell you! SAD

The administration has officially announced the formation of a new division intended to allow healthcare providers to discriminate against LGBT people and women seeking an abortion.

The Trump administration is considering a new “religious freedom” rule that would allow healthcare workers to refuse to treat LGBT patients. The move would also allow workers to deny care to a woman seeking an abortion or any other service they morally oppose.

Roger Severino, the head of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights, has actively opposed civil rights protections for minority communities. In his previous role as Director of the DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society for the conservative Heritage Foundation, Severino spoke out against the regulations he is now tasked with upholding.

The proposed rule, which has been closely guarded at HHS according to Politico, is under review by the White House currently. The administration declared yesterday “National Religious Freedom Day.”

1. The courts will shred this "rule" into confetti.

We can save it for the day this sack of shit is impeached.

4. I agree

I can see the Courts shooting this thing down pretty quickly. Just the fact that he is even proposing something like this - under the guise of "civil rights"- is outrageous!

At 64, this is becoming more and more poignant to me. Fourth quarter and all that!

6. actually the court heard a case on this in Oct

and no one is sure how they are going to rule (this is the case of the baker in CO). If that case makes a wide exemption then this rule could well survive.

2. This rule is unethical and dangerously undermines public health,

"It wasn’t enough to try to strip transgender Americans of their right to serve, roll back access to birth control, and attempt to defund Planned Parenthood. Now Trump, Pence, and their Republican cronies want to allow health care workers to discriminate and rip away access to medical care. This rule is unethical and dangerously undermines public health,” DNC Director of LGBTQ Media Lucas Acosta said in an emailed statement.

“This proposal is further proof that Republicans continue to push forward an agenda completely out of step with the American people and American ideals. Democrats will continue to focus on how to improve access to health care for all Americans regardless of gender, orientation, or income.”

3. I retired from 25 year career in nursing and can assure that that this won't make

ANY difference to 99% of healthcare workers. I can also say that if a nurse said anything like that she or he would find thems lives looking for another job pretty quickly.
It may be "allowed" but such bad behavior is frowned upon across the board.

8. I am sitting in an ICU surrounded by angels

They look like human beings but this is just a disguise. In real life they have already earned their space in heaven, near the front of the line.

How DOES one become the kind of human who is both compassionate AND knowledgeable, efficient AND gentle, able to deal with doctors and miserable patients and near death and recovery experiences? Smart, experienced, with valuable pattern recognition and caution and discicpline.

They are so VASTLY superior to bankers, M/A specialists, greedheads and CEOs.

They saved brother’s life three times this week. Gave him a reasonable chance of a full recovery.

It’s a small ward, and if someone comes here that someone doesn’t want to treat, wouuld they turn them away? Assign someone else? Disrupt the rhythm and rotation of a well-oiled team?

Absurd.

9. well said

My wife has been an ICU/PICU nurse for almost 40 years, most of it in a very red, conservative state. Not caring for someone presented to her unit is not the same as not baking a cake. Most of her staff ARE angels and if a "religious freedom division" created by Mr. Code Orange were to get through the courts, any practical effects, in my opinion, would be nil, especially for a regional or non-profit hospital. Another bugle call to rally his rabid, drooling circus is all it is. I just can't see it getting past the courts.

Absurd indeed

And then, wherever possible, boycott medical haters.

Would Catholics/Protestants be able to refuse treatment to the other?

Many Catholics/Protestants believe the other are not 'genuine' Christians.

'Freedom of Religion' don't you know?

Billy and Franklin Graham say Catholics are not Christians.

I don't want to be treated by a medical practitioner who is so ignorant as to fear gay people. I don't want such a person anywhere near my health management.

They only want to treat "this" straight person? Now they *can't* treat this person.

38. Conflicted

If this allows doctors or healthcare professionals to not treat LBGT people for anything other than Sex Change, or Abortion then It is Wrong! And will fail quickly to legal challange

If it protects Doctors from being forced to do Sex Reassignment surgery or perform abortions then I support.

No doctor or health care worker should be forced to do elective surgery, just as it should be illegal to deny critical healthcare to any group regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation etc.

41. NOBODY would be forced to do an abortion or sex change surgery anyway.

Wouldn't happen. That's not how medicine works. Doctors can ALREADY refuse to do invasive treatments, and only very specialized surgeons can do sexual reassignment surgeries.

43. A while ago they tried this in the Bay Area...

A transwoman went to a catholic-run hospital and they refused to give her new implants. After she asked her attorney to handle this, the hospital changed their decision and she got the new implants.

Only the most hateful healthcare workers may try this, and I bet the hospital's insurers will settle. Then the hospital admins can deal with the increased insurance rates...
