(1,474 posts)I am Texan and often say we would be blue if people would vote. I see a lot of voters in Austin. Still a steep, uphill climb, but it is a possibility.

(1,036 posts)The Astros World Series parade last year was said to be over a million strong .... so, if every single man woman and child that lived in Austin attended they would have still had to import people to tie the Astros parade.

(24,653 posts)Perhaps the writer assumes people know he means largest of similar type gatherings and not comparing against things like sports parades. Who knows?

(9,977 posts)I live in Austin, and local news stations reported a good turnout but not as many as last year. The crowd was definitely smaller but just as enthusiastic. Last year we had estimates of between 50,000 and 55,000, but I havent seen any estimates for this year.
Susan Calvin
(1,646 posts)And thanks to all who turned out in Austin.

(11,563 posts)But this year's march, last year's march....doesn't matter as much as knowing that momentum is far from being lost, and is actually GAINING in some areas.
Maybe in all areas...what do I know?

(1,646 posts)On edit - Please, yes, I can see the originator. He links only to a hashtag (i.e., nothing).
I repeat, who is he when he is at home.
(As in, why should I trust him as a source? Without extensive research.)

(1,646 posts)You are the one who is asking readers to trust him as a source.
I wasn't born yesterday, ok?

With 50,000 followers I'm guessing he's credible. He may exaggerate, but I'm not going to question him.
Susan Calvin
(1,646 posts)And did you read that Facebook is proposing to determine credible news sources by user polls?
Nope.
George II
(67,782 posts)Susan Calvin
(1,646 posts)You substantiate it. Substantiate it better than "50,000" followers, I would submit.
Not that I care much in this one instance, but I am interested in facts, sources, and research as a general principle.
George II

(1,646 posts)Are you saying that posting a tweet and expecting readers to believe it is not the same as quoting?
This is getting surreal.

(67,782 posts)....you have all the information you need to do that. Instead you're going after me.
'night!
Susan Calvin
(1,646 posts)Going after *you*......?
Please.
I'm "going after" intelligent discussion.
Post current pics and link to a source with credentials better than "50,000 followers," and I might be interested.
As for yourself, I have made a mental note.
Susan Calvin
(1,646 posts)You don't question authority, as a general principle?
Well, I do.
I thought Austin did.

(2,734 posts)Crowd size estimates were that 50,000 attended in 2017. There was a big crowd today but I'd say no more than 5,000. Maybe 2,000 or so were at City Hall at a guess, although from my vantage point there were areas I couldn't see.
Not sure how many marched to the Capitol or rallied there, but we drove past about 1:50 and saw a lot of folks with signs and pussy hats leaving. I thought it was going to go much later so opted out of that part since I needed to get back to let my dogs out.

(26,403 posts)Weather was much better - estimate was around 52K in 2017.
Weather, while it was good, is the first halfway decent day just after some really cold and nasty weather. Also there were more cities in Texas which held marches, so it's a case of apples/oranges. The turn out this year (from what I've heard - all unofficial) was around 15-20K.
Still a great turn out and a great march.

(14,725 posts)Cloudy until we started the march and then the sun came out. Good amount of people but less than last year. I wish someone would fix this erroneous headline.

(2,426 posts)Last year I went to the march in Austin. 50,000 people were reported to have marched. I marched with both my daughters and my son in law. This year I marched in Fort Worth with my daughter, my 4 yr old grand daughter and my 1 and a half year old grand son and my son in law. I didn't get a count of the march in Fort Worth. Has anyone heard?
I live in the ultra red Bryan-College Station area. People are educated here but a lot of them still support Trump. Go figure! We have to travel to get to a good sized march.

(26,619 posts)and the numbers were great this year. Our evangelical cousins in San Angelo depise trump and the current Texas government. They were all once Republicans, no more.
