By Danny Yadron
Republican Mitt Romney, who has focused almost his entire campaign on his ability to turn around the economy, continues to enjoy an advantage with voters on that key subject, even as he trails in other categories, according to the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.
In the survey of registered voters, 43% said Mr. Romney would provide better ideas on how to improve the economy compared with 36% who said President Barack Obama would do so.
But by virtually every other metric, registered voters appear to favor the president.
<...>
Despite Mr. Romneys advantage on economic issues, he appears to have done little to convince voters that he would change business as usual in Washington, the poll found. He remains statistically tied in that category with Mr. Obama among independents and the broader survey, despite being the challenger.

If Romney remains "statistically tied...among independents and the broader survey," is the 43 percent to 36 percent on one specific question?
The full poll will be released a 6:30 p.m.

(10,893 posts)It's just that a plurality of Americans in this poll still believe that a businessman is more competent at handling the economy.

(31,849 posts)To ask not whether "Mr. Romney WOULD provide better ideas on how to improve the economy"; but rather, "HAS Mr. romney provided better ideas on how to improve the economy?"
It would seem to me that the current phrasing is merely a cover for "not (President) Obama" voters since eomney has done little to lay out what he plans to do about the economy and how he plans to do it.

(24,355 posts)I wish somebody would too. I assume that some people must simply think that, because things aren't all sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows after 4 years of President Obama, it's time to try................somebody else and Romney fits the bill because, well, he's NOT President Obama? If asked, I would not be able to explain what Romney's plan to turn the economy around is. I guess that, for some people, just having somebody say that they have a plan to do something to make things better is good enough for them, I suppose?

(31,849 posts)I liken it to a person considering a contractor to do repairs on your house and them telling you, "Yep, I have big plans for remodeling your house. I'm gonna move some walls and do some re-wiring ... But I'm not going to tell you about my plans until AFTER you sign this here binding contract."
Who would go for that?

(24,355 posts)IMHO far too many people fail to treat their votes as carefully and with as much consideration as they do their money. What sickens me even more is that not only are so many people ALREADY ready and willing to vote for a complete cipher pretty much because they hate Barack Obama with the heat of a thousand stars but that so many people are (also) willing to put up with and vote for (and put in charge) a bunch of people for Congress that have essentially refused to do their jobs for the past 3-4 years and are, in fact, PROUD of themselves not doing their jobs. What kind of employer tolerates THAT? If we're supposed to be in charge of our country and our fate, a lot of us are IMHO doing a piss-poor job of overseeing our "employees" (i.e. the people we elect to govern us).

(31,849 posts)I heard Eugene Robinson touch on this point. They were talking about the survey, when he asked: " something to the effect of) So people apparently feel that romney has better plans for the economy, even though no one seems to know what they are."
I suspect the polling outfits know that if they were to drill down into those giving romney high marks on the economy, they will expose what's really going on ...
They are unthinking "Anybody But (President) Obama" voters.

(11,304 posts)people will take anything from this liar. I remember how happy when people around here got a rebate of $600 dollars. My husband said to some who is going to pay for that rebate you get? People are so dumb. They think just because a democrat who really cares for all it's citizens, all they can say is liberals are socialists, communist, Marxist or whatever "Ist" there is left. Republicans get shafted over and over and over. They will vote for this man whose only interest is to make the top 1% richer at the middle classes expense. How much longer is god going to keep us in the wilderness? I think america deserves better from the republican party.

(11,541 posts)Now, THAT's going to improve the economy to the point of bankrupting how many seniors yet????
How about THAT throwing it in a TOTAL depression not seen since 1929????
Yeah, rrrrrright.... the ignoramusses are deluding themselves in their absolute ignorance...

(63,771 posts)campaign one by one on Romney, probably starting in September. The voucher bomb will be one. Another one will be the closing of loopholes of the middle class -- such as the mortgage interest deduction -- but not on corporate jets. They will target these bombs to cause as much destruction as possible and force Romney to explain why he supports them, which he does because they are part of the Ryan budget plan. As I see it, Romney is a sitting duck for these attacks. His "economic plan" won't look so good after the smoke clears...

(5,818 posts)that's too inhuman. Hence the Obama campaign's effort to portray Romney as a cruel and greedy job outsourcer and tax cheat, to soften him up so the policy charges will stick in the fall.

I keep coming back to this hilarious Onion piece that they did back in 2009. IMHO it still rings pretty true: http://www.theonion.com/video/zombie-reagan-raised-from-grave-to-lead-gop,14385/
