January 21, 2018 at 8:28 am EST By Taegan Goddard
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has called for a vote to end the government shutdown at 1 a.m. on Monday, the Washington Post reports.
McConnells plan would keep the government open through February 8 but is unlikely to include any of the concessions Democrats are seeking on immigration.
Politico: Both sides dug in on Saturday, signaling they were prepared for a longer impasse. Both sides tried to hammer each other on their political messaging. And it was clear that the respective party leaders believed the other had badly misjudged the mood of the country.

I think we are going to see a new Sino-Soviet alliance.
Add in India and Pakistan and the alliance contains a big
chunk of the world's population.

(46,435 posts)greatly, China and Russia will probably be at each other's throats for the
#1 spot.
I put my money on China, they play the long game, tend to not have public battles
with opponents, and are pragmatic. They are much more level headed, patient
and calm than Putin and the Russians.
And when Putin goes, who knows what will happen with Russia.
China has a longer term stability.

(58,785 posts)we could STOP being a superpower any time in the foreseeable future, even if we wanted to?
Itm, the dreams of Putin and conservative Russians across the nation to invade a couple dozen sovereign nations around its borders are a serious threat for China. The last thing it needs is the former Soviet Union reconstituted as one giant next-door nation under authoritarian control.
China's plan to expand its influence and access to natural resources across western Eurasia is similarly a huge not-in-this-millennium to Russia.
Itm, both have huge internal problems that threaten their stability and ability merely to maintain. Far more serious than ours. Btw, Russia is not really an advanced, developed nation on par with the community of such. Its size has always mislead it into visions of greatness far beyond its current capabilities.

(46,435 posts)I stand by that statement.
And China is going to be a force to be reckoned with.

(58,785 posts)thoughts back into the realm of what most experts seem to consider very possible/probable. Even assuming backlash here in the U.S. against electing incompetents, I'm guessing China would not need anything like two decades to become a superpower. Its centralized authoritarian government is a tremendous asset for directing an entire nation to one goal.
Russia? It's a real mess. Like all of us, it first has to avoid being its own worst enemy. Itm, that whole top government is exporting as much of its wealth as fast as possible to private accounts in case they need to leave.
Climate change is going to bring enormous problems to us all, including social and political. Increased civil unrest in both China and Russia is guaranteed. Did I mention that China's fresh water supplies are already severely, destabilizingly low in many regions? Perhaps technology will help solve that problem.
Yada yada. Of the 3, we're the strongest and most trusted and will probably remain so. With all our faults and mistakes, until recently we had a long, proven history of being a very needed stabilizing force for the planet. Call me cynical, but when it comes to overdeveloping their own militaries or continuing to lean on us, most nations will probably be willing to let us purchase some renewed "trust" and alliances. Not that I want to continue subsidizing other advanced nations, only that I suspect it's likely to continue with only some shifting of the load.

(3,515 posts)The Republicans have a long-term strategy -- which ends with cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.
Make them face the consequences of their terrible tax bill right now.
Time to draw a line in the sand.
No more.
The whole goal was to blame the Democratic members of Congress for this mess.

They could get it done in a day or two if everybody was in sync. I hear a lot of cacophony.
