Visitors hoping to tour the historic mission, stroll through the heritage orchard or participate in a chocolate-making demonstration Saturday at Tumacácori National Historical Park were surprised and disappointed to find a "park closed" sign posted in front of the entrance.

"Because of the federal government shutdown, this National Park Service facility is closed," the sign read.

"This just blows me away. I don't understand this at all," said Ruby Means, a "snowbird" originally from Oklahoma who is wintering in Arizona and who came to the park on Saturday not knowing that the federal government had shut down at midnight over a funding dispute ...

The class teaches people how to storm spot hazardous weather ...

So perhaps consider this a trial run of what the GOP sees as the future for National Parks and Monuments. Perhaps voters will realize what they will be losing.

Yeah, I know it sucks, especially if you have already made plans for a visit.

... Waco-based economist Ray Perryman said he believes the shutdown will prove short-lived, but if it drags on, it could have notable economic effects. People still recovering from natural disasters and depending on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to get back on their feet are left vulnerable, he said.

"I was in Jefferson County last week, and they are still thousands of FEMA trailers short of their needs," Perryman said.

Perryman said even a brief pause produces economic "inefficiencies."

"When you take 800,000 people away from their jobs, things happen," he said. "A very long shutdown begins to cause a breakdown in many areas — checks, permits, and documents not being processed; construction projects delayed. Many functions, such as the military and homeland security, are deemed 'essential' and continue to work, but their support systems are eroded ...
