Seems like if they know where earthquake happened they'd know w/i a few mins if the ocean suddenly developed huge swells in the vicinity and tell which direction they're heading.

Rise in height far out in the ocean when they begin but they are building up speeds of almost 500 mph. The huge waves don’t come until the giant bulge of water begins to hit shallow depths, then the wave height rises up and the speed come down to about 50 mph he said, but it can be 50 feet high at 50mph so it’s on unbelievable force , that can last 30 or 40 minutes after hitting land.

At 2:22 am PST @MSNBC reporting that buoys south of Alaska reporting 30 ft wave is heading towards Alaska and Pacific Northwest coastlines.

Approx 2:15 mins until Tsunami Wave will start hitting Alaska and Northern Washington State coastlines.

Where Tsunami warning sirens exist, they should be going off by now.

on the coast in San Diego. They are on elevated land so should be OK. I am closer to downtown and further inland. CNN said it has now been downgraded to 7.9 and that does make a difference.

I have watched ALL the videos from Japan in the past. That quake was much larger (9.0) and the tsunami was 90' high in some cities. Go high UP and go quickly. It starts slowly and then fills up after draining the original water out to the ocean and there are usually several waves. All the land around the coast defines each location individually and specifically and how if will react as the water/waves go back and forth. Being in one is like being in a washing machine with concrete, metal, wood all smashed together.

Do NOT go close to the coast out of curiosity. The one from Japan reached the CA coast and was only about 1' high but a few people died since they got too close to watch it.

A powerful earthquake in Alaska didn’t trigger a big tsunami — here’s why

Last night, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck southeast of Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska, prompting a tsunami warning that forced people to flee to higher grounds in the middle of the night. Fortunately, the tsunami waves were less than a foot high, and the advisories were canceled a little after 4AM local time. So why was Alaska so lucky?

“Alaska is no stranger to these kinds of quakes,” says Don Blakeman, a geophysicist with the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Last night’s earthquake generated because of all the strain building up on the subduction zone, but it did not occur exactly on a fault where the Pacific Ocean seafloor is sliding under the North American plate, Blakeman says. Instead, the quake occurred a little farther out, in a place where the fault is moving horizontally. This type of quake, called a strike-slip earthquake, is less likely to trigger large tsunamis, and this is probably why Alaska only saw waves of less than a foot, according to Blakeman.

When earthquakes happen on the subduction zone itself, where one plate is pushing down while the other is going up, then high waves form. “To get a tsunami, you have to have substantial vertical movement on the seabed,” Blakeman says. Those types of earthquakes were responsible for the massive tsunamis in Japan and Indonesia.

posted to FB that they'd been evacuated but were allowed to go home when the tsunami didn't come. Hope that's all the shaking these folks get. I'll bet it was quite a night up there. On another note, we've had a swarm of smaller quakes (4.0 ish) here in western MT. Lots of rocking and rolling on the planet!
