Joy Reid: Democrats Bold Fold Shifts Pressure Onto Trump and GOP

...That may not sound like much, and any Democrat who wants to run for president in 2020 was smart to vote against it, but the deal is actually more than it appears to be. Here are three reasons why:

It freed 9 million kids the GOP was holding hostage

Monday’s deal took the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, off the table. On Thursday, South Dakota Republican Sen. Mike Rounds made an interesting admission to NBC’s Chuck Todd about the program that Republicans had cynically allowed to run out of money nearly three months ago. “Under the current proposal,” Rounds said, “CHIP is now off the table because it’s been extended for a period of six years. And so then what is the next bargaining chip that brings Democrats to the table?” That’s exactly where the GOP finds itself now. As one blogger at the Daily Kos cleverly put it: Dems free 8.9M child hostages from kidnappers; 690K adults still being held as negotiations continue...

It puts McConnell on the spot

McConnell is now on the hook to follow through on the deal he made. Sure, it would defy his demonstrated proclivity for hyper-partisanship and plain old chicanery to do so, but unlike past instances like health care or the tax bill or the stolen Supreme Court seat where he could lock Democrats out of the room with impunity due to the 50-plus-1 vote threshold available to him, in this case the 60-vote rule applies. If McConnell goes back on his word, the consequences would be a second shutdown, with Democrats having demonstrated a willingness to let it happen...

It’s now Trump and the crazy right vs. everyone else

All of the reporting heading into the shutdown made it plain: Donald Trump caused the shutdown by suddenly backing out of a deal with Lindsey Graham and Dick Durbin at the behest of thirtysomething alt-right-ist Stephen Miller and increasingly sinister White House chief of staff, John Kelly. Joe Scarborough even made a point of mocking Trump as being “led around” by Miller Monday morning. Trump then waffled on what to do, sunk into a mood, and evidently played no part in ending the crisis. In the meantime, his re-election campaign put out a cartoonishly racist Willie Horton-style ad that further isolates him.

CHIP is funded for 6 years. Is no longer bargaining chip for repugs.

McConnell openly pledged public debate and vote on Dreamers. 90% of the country is against deporting Dreamers.

McConnell visibly objected to legislation to maintain Military pay during the shutdown.

Trump was forced to cower in his hide-away as repugs did not want his interference.

Miller's and Kelly's control of marionette trump was exposed.

Bipartisan support for Dreamers in Senate will force House to show its true colors.

Meanwhile, Nazi-like deportation of Dreamers publicized on MSM.

Democrats have almost ensured a GOP civil war over Dreamers.

Either legislation for Dreamers will result, trump will have to use executive order to protect Dreamers, or the GOP will be shown to be a Nazi-like organization and many innocent people will be badly hurt, the labor force will be severely damaged, and this ghastly scenario will be played out daily on MSM.

Perhaps even repugs are not stupid enough to let this unfold. But then, they do have trump as their impotent leader.

and, he will renege, it will cause a few days of outrage that will likely be forgotten by most come election day.

The Cruz shutdown of 2013 helped the GOP because it fired up their base to the point where Republicans gained 9 seats in the senate.

but the Dreamer thing will generate a lot of outrage. ICE agents are acting like Gestapo. If McConnell reneges and the deportation of Dreamers proceeds, it will generate daily outrage as MSM shows good Americans being treated like Jewish People in Nazi Germany.

and fully understand that the USA was never a "white" country based on it's original peoples (Native Americans and Native Latinos)
Most USA's citizens know that many upon many of her forefathers were immigrates, some skillful and some not. The immigrates came for "religious freedoms", some came for a new beginning, most was sent here because they were criminals (Europe). Slaves were brought against their will.

Our present day Republicans have no soul and believe their GAWD has chosen them to wipe out everybody who does not believe the way they do. Ain't gonna work.

One of the original items on the house bill was to extend CHIP funding for approx. 60 days. Dems got 6 six years. Another, criminalize DACA recipients who do not stay above the poverty line. There are more horrible shit in the house bill.

So yes, dealing with people who don't give shit, Dems did well and will continue to fight for immigrates.
