Campaign to draft Joe Biden for 2020 says it's not too early

Kathie Obradovich, kobradov@dmreg.com Published 3:14 p.m. CT Jan. 24, 2018

Iowa Democrats argue the focus must be on 2018 elections.

A “draft” campaign aimed at encouraging former Vice President Joe Biden to run for president could soon open a field office in Iowa, almost two years in advance of the 2020 Iowa caucuses.

Two Illinois Quad Cities men, Collin West and Matthew Graf, filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission about three weeks ago to create the Time for Biden super PAC. “We realized that there needs to be a change, and to win in 2020 for the Democrats, we really need a superstar who is popular with the people and who also has good policy substance and that guy happens to be Joe Biden,” West said.

He said the early response to Time for Biden has been encouraging. “I expected this to be a kind of long and grueling effort, but even in the past three weeks, we’ve had a lot of support,” he said.

He said that’s taken the form of people reaching out to volunteer, invitations for speaking engagements to Democratic groups and some media attention. “We’re in the process of securing a large donation, so the support has been pretty surprising, and it’s been pretty big for this early,” he said.

Biden is a good candidate, but he comes with a lot of baggage.

Known as the Senator of MBNA, (now Bank of America), he favored the credit companies over people who were facing bankruptcy
Anita Hill
His Iraq War vote
His PATRIOT Act vote

Better for him to stay as a grandpa to his grandkids and stay retired, in my humble opinion. There are far better choices out there.

We need the oldest possible candidate to excite the youth vote. Everyone loves their Grandparents, but they love their Great-Grandparents even more!

10. At a time when the party is making a great shift to the left on economics.

His conservative economic views will sink him quickly. People seem to forget some things about Biden as he has taken on a different role over the last decade.

Biden will get a lot of support. Many of those same people will be quick to knee-cap him. Our party should not move to the right with our next Presidential candidate.

I welcome him into the primary. He is a solid voice for us. He won't make it far.
