Just reading it brings back the pain the Obamas must have felt but a must read.
"For eight years they watched you relentlessly demonize a black President; a man faithfully married for 26 years; a doting father and husband without a hint of moral scandal or the slightest whiff of infidelity.
They watched you deny his personal faith convictions, argue his birthplace, and assail his characterall without cause or evidence. They saw you brandish Scriptures to malign him and use the laziest of racial stereotypes in criticizing him.

Bit of a broad brush? If you guys were speaking about minority evangelicals your posts would be hidden, and yes, there are a bunch of minority evangelicals.
Only assholes are assholes.
And while we're on the subject of frustrated anger, roughly 30% of all white working class males voted Democratic in 2016.
I despise what most social conservative evangelicals are doing as much as anyone, and probably more than some because I'm surrounded by them here in the deep South. I get hate glares, and I hide my relationship to our son because it could destroy the business he does in this area if it were known.
But these assholes are very reliable voters, and they're certainly not "through with" themselves just because some others wish their wishes were horses.
Most will never have what we'd consider a true "come to Jesus" moment and will never repent.
We have to outvote them.

(1,020 posts)Why the white racist groups are aligned against Jews, Muslims, and LGBT: they're led by fundagelical types.
They *say* they're Christian, but they have no idea what that means. They think their fundagelical "ministers" represent Christianity. They are quite mistaken.

(40,416 posts)Fundamentalists above all worship the Hebrew Bible, aka the Old Testament. For Christ sakes, they want to put the Decalogue -- aka, the Ten Commandments -- into every courthouse and schoolroom in the country. This is where they get their opposition to gays, but somehow all sorts of sexual preversions are okee-dokey. All is forgiven -- one gets a Mulligan from God -- as long as one is Republican. Apparently, except the gay.
Shame!

(12,645 posts)Honestly - if you want awareness of what the Old Testament has in it, ask a rabbi or an atheist.
There are three versions of the Ten Commandments in the KJV Old Testament, and the one they like to quote when they're thumping others with their good book is only #2. And as for being a Christian, Jesus also has commandments, in John 14:15 and other places.
They've got no idea what the whole Sodom and Gomorrah story is about - it's not about punishment for sexual misbehavior, the destruction of the cities were for breaking crucial hospitality laws, cheating and stealing from visitors - ultimately, because they were proud in their wealth and put servicing their wealth above "God's Laws".
Oh, and it's pretty clear in the KJV that had the crowd had just left when Lot offered his daughters, the city would not have been destroyed.
White Evangelical Nationalists put in "biblical laws" that aren't in the book to support their opposition to other races and abortion, and totally ignore the actual biblical laws regarding fair treatment to promote the survival of the community, no matter what sorts of other cultures are part of the community.
Their preachers and theological leaders are just as proud and greedy as those who lead Sodom and Gomorrah astray, and brought down the destruction of those cities. But since they're so invested in their wealth and power, they won't see it.
BTW, if they only read the Old Testament, wouldn't that make them Jewish or Levites? Christians are supposed to include the New Testament, especially the Red Letter parts.

(15,216 posts)And all of these stories are just that. Parables, nudges, snippets of drunken remembrances - transcribed and reinterpreted by other drunken and/or zealots.
If we're looking for a phrase that supports our position on any subject, I'm sure we can find it in some ancient hammurabic code or elsewhere. Or invent it, because most of the morons that listen to them don't give-a-shit.
BTW, I really am agreeing with you! 110%!

(40,416 posts)Let's see if I can remember... The Priestly source, the Yawist source, the Elohist source, and Deuteronomy. That's likely why so many narratives in the Torah repeat themselves.
Yup! Atheists are generally better read on the Bible than holier than thou Christians.
Thanks for your response.

(15,378 posts)To tell as many evangelicals that thanks to the internet, their hypocrisy is easily seen by all, and if they want to find a reason for the rapid increase in "nones" and flat-out atheists, all they have to do is look in the mirror for the cause.
And then I thank them for their service because the sooner we stop relying on the "morals" of Bronze-Age goat-herders, the better.

(12,212 posts)I think it lasted for me for about a year.
A few things slapped me awake: one was that I found if I didn't go to their prayer meetings, they shunned me and didn't want to be friendsavoided me, didn't call me, etc.
After I pulled myself out that crap, it was like getting a new life: it was literally like a veil was lifted from my eyes.
The "reborn Christian" period of my life, was hands-down the most depressing and anxious part of my life.
Scary stuff.

(19,190 posts)The moment you free yourself from the yoke of religious dogma is just as you said, "it was literally like a veil was lifted from my eyes". For me it was as if a great weight had been lifted off my shoulders. All of the guilt and shame they heap heap upon you disappeared. To me, that was what heaven was supposed to feel like. And the love.........the love I was supposed to feel as a christian finally appeared. The love of everyone, all inclusive, finally manifested itself when I rejected the "christian love" I was always taught about. There were too many conditions set for the supposed "christian love". John 9:25 suddenly had real meaning; "He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see". I hate to throw their scriptures back at them in defense of my awakening, but for the first time it all made sense.
It's always nice to run into others who have fled the hypocrisy of the "born agains".

(629 posts)Evangelicals are going to love Gump as long as her gives them what they want. OK, you understand they are getting what they want.
Gump is giving evangelicals what they want because it costs Gump nothing! I doesn't cost him any political capital. Matter of fact it strengthens it. It cost Gump no power to give them what they want. And mainly.....M A I N L Y....... it cost Gump nothing monetarily. He is giving away parts of American freedom because his pockets are still full of gold and as long as he is not impacted in the pocket book Gump will do anything if he is looked at as the person who actually did what they wanted.
This is how you get a 39% voting block that will never leave you no matter what you do to other people.

(1,148 posts)Black religious folk apparently don't share the same views - but their opinion carries no weight with white evangelicals. White conservative "Christianity" is just racism and segregation - those are the real roots of their beliefs. In basing their support for Trump in their religious views, they are essentially saying that black Christians err in their beliefs.
