Local Democrats Face Cash Crunch

Politico: “At a time when many Democratic candidates and groups are reporting record-breaking fundraising, the top state party officials gathered here for the meeting of the Association of State Democratic Committees say their local parties are cash-starved, raising the prospect that they won’t be able to take full advantage of what could be a historic opportunity in the midterm elections.”

“Local committees are in desperate need of more money if they’re going to support the costly precinct-level organizing and political groundwork needed to win back the House of Representatives, compete for the Senate and governor’s mansions, and swing back state legislatures, they say.”

for most of my life. Democrats at the local level are on their own when it comes to raising funds. They need to ask for help from their state and federal Democrats. They should be asking for help in HOW to raise funds. They can ask their state committee members to give money to candidates on the local level. They should ask for workshops on fundraising.

Keep and maintain voter lists, knock on doors, organize neighbor-to-neighbor outreach that benefit the entire ticket from top to bottom.

Any money you give to Mickey Mouse for Congress is only good for the duration of the campaign (and in his war chest should he win).

But if you go to knock on doors for Mickey Mouse and notice that a bunch of people have moved or passed away, it is important that that information is shared with other campaigns so they don't waste time trying to get out a dead voter. The state party funds the voter file (among other things) to make sure that data such as that is shared with other campaigns and archived for the long-term so the deceased/moved will not show up on future walk/call lists.

Another way to put it--- money for the campaign is when you buy a pizza. Money to a state (or national) party is money for the tools/ingredients you need to make that pizza.

I'm about to start campaign #11 so I'm fully versed in votebuilder. Previously, I was just able to log onto votebuilder.com (depending on the state as I've worked in 9).

Now you use sites like njvan.com or nysvan.com (the last two I used). When you log in, it will say things like DNC and New Jersey Democratic State Committee.

But every state party has a staffer who's job is just to maintain the voter file. This is why state parties need funding.
