the representatives of that 86% just do it? The problem was caused 100% by Trump (listening to Miller, no doubt) throwing out Obama's order and daring Congress to do something about it.
If this were an honest government, Congress would take that dare and agree to a plan regardless of what Miller and his stooge President want. The majority would be veto-proof.

(40,149 posts)The small percentage of the republican base who have the power to turn an election by voting third party or staying home. Republicans need those votes in order to get re-elected. They don't care about people. They care about their own jobs and holding on to their own political power.

(50,168 posts)it could be done. They could put it up for a vote tomorrow and it would pass. For some strange reason, Congressional Republicans have decided to throw away all common sense and self respect for Don the Con.

(190 posts)Remember, Trump seems to have a floor right around 35% (give or take a couple of points). These are the hardcore Trumpists who make excuses for everything he says and does. Why? Because they agree with him on these hot-button, emotionally-charged issues. So does anyone think any part of that 35% wants any kind of deal that allows these people to stay?

The majority of congress and Senate doesn't represent the majority of voters.

(10,072 posts)We are 100% capitalist. Capitalism was never really compatible with democracy anyway. It's much more compatible with dictatorships or totalitarian countries...just look at China.
Our economic system has superceded our political system. It was bound to happen. Politics and economics are really the same animal in many ways. Now we have uniformity across both systems.
You have very little voice about how things run at work, and you certainly got none of the profits from your labor. Now you have no voice about how things run in our government, and you certainly aren't going to get any of the huge profits from selling off the pieces. See it's all so very capitalist.

(28,270 posts)Most people want legal cannabis but only a handful of states have it. Most people want affordable health care for all. Most people want a living wage for all. Most people want medicare/Medicaid/social security strengthened and left alone. Most people want to help feed hungry people with SNAP. Most people are for meals on wheels. Most people are against giving huge tax breaks to billionaires.
And yet we don't have that because billionaires like the Koch brothers and the Mercer's and the Walton's don't want those things and their billions speak much louder than my 5 or 10 bucks that I can spare occasionally to the democratic party and it's candidates.
All the checks and balances against rule by bank account were conveniently removed by SCOTUS some time ago and now we have rule by the biggest checkbook.
It fucking sucks and these prick greed monster rich bastards are going to bleed this country dry and kill off every social program that benefits the poor, the working class and the middle class ASAP.

(35,812 posts)Here's the study's title: "Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens"
Here's a digestible summary: http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-echochambers-27074746
From Martin Gilens, one of the study's authors: "... contrary to what decades of political science research might lead you to believe, ordinary citizens have virtually no influence over what their government does in the United States. And economic elites and interest groups, especially those representing business, have a substantial degree of influence. Government policy-making over the last few decades reflects the preferences of those groups of economic elites and of organized interests..."
We are continually confused because our schooling has told us that we are a democracy, when congressional votes during four administrations shows exactly what we are.
The really scary thing, to me, is finding out what the Koch brothers want to do with their newly built power now shown through their decades of effort to establish their capitalist-libertarian network. Charles Koch has said many times that the constitutional majoritarian system of this country is broken. And of course, he has done his mighty best to make sure it stays that way, and that all governmental-institutional social supports are dismantled.

I always wonder when the morbidly wealthy will be satiated? And that will never happen. Their happiness depends on more for them by making less for you. Especially if it means yet more suffering for the undeserving masses. If you un wealthy you unworthy and deserve your miserable life cuz your character defects mark you as sub-human.
Funny how the strategy of the kleptocrats of the 1920's has been reborn in the descendants of the overly wealthy of many generations ago?
Trump doesn't have enough consciousness to have an end game, but his masters like the Koch's and The Putin's sure as hell do!
