(332 posts)Uhh... You do know he is talking about voting theses guys out in Republican primaries.
You know, jettisoning the reactionary populist element that has taken over the Republican party and installing a more rational and steady conservative leadership; like "W."
It's nice to know that Democrats and movement conservatives are on the same page....
Thanks for the update!

(90,565 posts)Steve Schmidt is one who talks about the "moral rot at the center of the Republican Party." Don't dismiss them out of hamd. Small-c conservatives are our allies.

(332 posts)How exactly is Steve Schmidt "our ally?"
He worked his ass off to get "W" elected; Small-c my foot!
Your quoting someone who is nothing but conservative outreach to dimwitted progressives.

(56,828 posts)Steve Schmidt calling out Republicans is usually a lot more effective than most Democrats calling out Republicans in a "man bites dog" sense - Democrats calling out Republicans is partisan politics, but a Republican calling out a fellow Republican is a lot more rare.
Should we only accept allies that have been Democrats since they turned 18 and registered to vote?

(332 posts)MSNBC analysts speak exclusively to Democrats. Republicans have Fox, independents have CNN, et.al. If he "call(s) out" Republicans it is only to that limited audience.
It's our own echo chamber. Let me suggest that as a "movement conservative" he is in fact attempting to advance his own interests; misdirecting attention and casting events as inevitable. The last thing he wants is to see a successful return of the American left to political dominance.
If he attacks Trump, it is ultimately to advance issues that we "should" still find repugnant.
No, .... he is not our ally!

(56,828 posts)or any TV news, and I have no doubt that Schmidt, Scarborough, Ana Navarro, Jennifer Rubin, Rick Wilson and others are not "friends" with Democrats. However, if they're against Trump, I welcome them to the opposition.

But, isnt that the point....

(332 posts)Steve is a great guy; a real asset as we sojourn in the wilderness! A reasonable Republican that we could accomplish something with.
..... as long as we are all wandering to the right (Bush tax cuts), to the right (Romneycare), to the right (world-wide militarization), to the right (Trump tax cuts). The list goes on and on and on.....
He is a real calming, steady and focusing presents; a real ally.
"We'd be fools" ....... Oh no, We are fools!

(10,825 posts)Strange times make for strange bedfellows. We'd be foolish, even reckless not to join those who are Never Trumpers to do what needs to be done: defeat Trumpism before it defeats us. All of us.
Yes, Schmidt is a conservative, as is Rick Wilson, Jennifer Rubin, David Frum, Evan McMullin and a host of others. They write, they speak out and are part of the resistance to the Trumpster and his sickening sycophants. At the moment, that's all that matters.
Once this nightmare is over, we can all go back to our corners and fight like barn cats over policy and political philosophy. But right now? We're on the same side, fighting the same good fight. Steve Schmidt has spoken eloquently, passionately about the danger of Trump and his fascist underpinnings. As Democrats, we should support and respect that because each and every voice gives us the chance to fight and survive another day as a country, as a people.
Benjamin Wittes, another conservative, wrote an essay several days/weeks ago in which he explicitly stated that Republicans need to be defeated everywhere in November. Right down to dogcatcher. Because it's the only message that will work: we reject all things Trump, all enablers and every excuse the GOP has made. You (Republicans) deserve to be wiped out.
That's a message I fully support.
