Some members of Utahs GOP and presidential candidate Mitt Romney are looking for distance between themselves and an accused serial rapist. Republican activist Gregory Nathan Peterson, 37, was charged Thursday with 23 felony counts including rape and aggravated kidnapping. He is in the Salt Lake County Jail with bail set at $750,000.
During an ongoing investigation, police noticed similarities between some rape reports over the past 16 months. The reports, filed with various agencies, added to the confusion. Salt Lake County Attorney Sim Gill did no know why it took so long to arrest Peterson after the first rape was reported on March 26, 2011. snip
Peterson has been running pictures of himself on Facebook with prominent Utah republicans and others including Senators Marco Rubio-R, Florida and Jim DeMint-R, South Carolina, as well as Mitt Romney.
Peterson claims to have a close, personal friendship with Romney sons Tagg and Josh from their days at BYU, and added the rest of the family during the 2002 Winter Olympics. The Romney campaign released a statement saying Peterson had not been involved in their campaign since 2007 when he helped chair an event and are Appalled with the situation. They added, And you can believe he wont be going forward.
