Bundler provides another connection between Romney campaign and Plame leak
by Laura Clawson
It turns out that all the while Mitt Romney was blasting the Obama White House for supposedly engaging in national security leaks, his campaign is basically a hive of people involved in outing Valerie Plame as a CIA operative. In addition to the campaign adviser quoted in a Romney press release attacking Obama who was the one who suggested to Scooter Libby that leaks about Joe Wilson's Niger trip might be a good idea, Romney has a Plame leak-involved bundler.
Richard Hohlt, a lobbyist who has bundled $22,500 for Romney's campaign and personally given $20,500 to his Super PAC, was really interested in being helpful to Karl Rove on the Plame leak:
As far as we know right now, Romney's campaign is advised and funded by people involved in a national security leak that led to four felony convictions for a high-ranking Bush administration official. Anyone else? Maybe another donor or three will somehow have had a hand in the leak? Maybe Scooter Libby is some kind of secret campaign adviser?
It makes sense. Romney is promising a return to the policies and personnel of George W. Bush. Why would a little matter like the leak of a CIA operative's identity be exempt from that?

On July 11, 2003, three days before the column was published, Novak gave him a preview copy. (Unknown to Hohlt, Rove had already confirmed to Novak that Wilson's wife worked at the CIA.) That same day, Hohlt e-mailed details about the column to Rove, and later faxed him the entire unpublished article. (Rove's lawyer confirms this account.) I was just trying to be helpful, Hohlt says.

is there any validity to his claims? I really didn't follow this story when it hit due to other things going on in my day to day. What is this all about?

This is an intriguing story that hit Newsweek on the role and influence of a relatively unknown super lobbyist and former staffer to Richard Lugar, Richard Hohlt.
Hohlt is one of the major heavyweights in Republican party fundraising. Check out how he has spread the wealth. He's not well-known across America, but all the elite folks running the country will take Hohlt's calls.
Apparently, before Robert Novak wrote his column outing Valerie Plame, he sent a pre-publication copy to Richard Hohlt. Hohlt then sent the Novak story to Karl Rove to give him a "head's up."
Fascinating. That is the way Washington works. Circles within circles.
Hohlt did not know that Rove had already dumped what he knew about Valerie Plame Wilson to Novak -- but still the way the web is woven is important for outsiders to see.
He has for many years run an elite dinner group called "Off the Record." Top tier DC pols regularly attend. I have never had the opportunity.
I had heard of Hohlt but don't think I have met him before.
This is part of the political machine in Washington. An important journalist needs sources, lobbyists need access, the presidential adviser needs to know what is going on, and they all trade in information.

You know, the Cofer Black/Ric Prado CTC guys who let the 9/11 hijackers into the US, obstructed John O'Neill's I-49 FBI antiterrorism unit, allowed UBL to walk out of Tora Bora, and then got huge CIA contracts to do worldwide assassinations. Yes, them.
