I found funny too

I also felt it reflect a sort of desperation...

Reminds me of a funny thing:

I was walking down the street in London, and I found a one pound coin on the ground in front of a betting parlor. I went in and put that coin on a big grey horse to win, at 70-1.
That big grey came down the stretch in the lead, and that jockey was standing up, pulling those reins to whoa that horse, all the way down the rail!

A lovely black filly won...grey came in 5th. Easy come, easy go!
