The GOP says the Steele Dossier was used to get a FISA warrant to spy on Carter Page. Was Carter Page mentioned in the Steele Dossier? I'm not the smartest person in the world, but for the GOP's memo to make sense wouldn't there have to be a direct connection between the Steele Dossier and Carter Page. I thought the Steele Dossier was about Trump. The GOP seems hell bent on making any FISA warrant about the Steele dossier when there are actually other reasons for monitoring Page.

(32,785 posts)Plus, Page did a lot of other things to draw attention to himself during the campaign, speeches and trips to Russia. The GOP needs this to be about the Steele dossier because the dossier has things in it that seem outrageous had hard to prove. The memo is just a diversion.
OhNo-Really
(3,985 posts)According to the Steele dossier vehemently disputed by Page and subsequently rubbished by Nunes, and Republicans the real purpose of Pages trip was clandestine. He had come to meet with the Kremlin. And in particular with Igor Sechin. Sechin was a former spy and, more importantly, someone who commanded Putins absolute confidence. He was in effect Russias second most powerful official, its de facto deputy leader.

This Politico article tells most of the Carter Page story and his Russian ties beginning in the 1990s.

Whatever Pages motives were for helping Russian intelligencegreed, naivety, stupidityhis actions surely justified the FBIs interest in him. There was a simple way of avoiding U.S. surveillance and a FISA court warrant. It could be summed up like this: Dont hang out with Russian spies.

And, as Rachel Maddow pointed out, a couple weeks later he was bragging in a letter that he was "an informal advisor to the Kremlin."
This was YEARS before Chris Steele got started.

(5,268 posts)"Foreign policy adviser to the Trump presidential campaign Carter Page disputed the accuracy of parts of the dossier compiled by ex-British spy Christopher Steele in his testimony to the House Intelligence Committee last week, but his comments also appear to corroborate sections of the controversial document and raise new questions over his meetings in Russia.
In a transcript of Pages seven-hour testimony released by the committee late Monday, the former adviser says he met briefly with Russian government officials and the head of investor relations at Russias state-owned oil company Rosneft during a trip to Moscow in July 2016. He also spoke at a graduation ceremony at Moscow's New Economic School that month, where he was critical of U.S. policy toward Russia"
