(11,096 posts)The one Pence and mother hate so.
Everywhere Pence and Mother go they are shunned.
They have the honor and the privilege of representing our country at these Games and so far they have acted like classless dopes. I wish they'd stayed home.

(53,342 posts)Put his money where his mouth was with a beautiful performance.
Isn't fit to carry Rippon's lunch bucket.
Our vice president disparaging one of our best Olympic athletes ... Pence is a POS for sure.

(4,238 posts)Im one of those who only watches skating during the Olympics, so I know I dont understand the rules, BUT....Rippon was flawless! I was spellbound during his routine. How did Chan (the Canadian skater who fell several times) earn more points than he did?
TomSlick
(11,096 posts)As I say, I don't understand the technical aspects of the sport. Despite what the announcers are telling us, it all seems pretty subjective.
Nevertheless, it was beautiful. It was inspired. It was a young man giving it everything he has.

(52,155 posts)He has one that he tries some times.

(44,973 posts)So the base value without quad jumps was much lower. The other two fell, but they still got points.
Bradical79
(4,490 posts)It was talked about at one point where doing a high difficulty technique with a botched landing gets more points than the lower difficulty techniques. Rippon and some others left out their biggest jumps for team competition.
He should have gotten at least 2nd place though due to how close his technical score was to that Russian guy. The artistic portion of the score should have easily put him up. It doesn't really matter with how the team points system had placed them, but still... c'mon.
LisaL
(44,973 posts)He was doing quadruple jumps (four revolutions). Even if he falls after the jump, he still gets point for doing that jump.

(27,801 posts)It was razor close but I think they underscored him on the artistic element.
mcar
(42,300 posts)He should have gotten way better artistic points. The Russian guy was blah.
I get why Chan, the Canadian, did better despite falling. His quads were amazing. But the Russian guy was just men.

(182,758 posts)Chan fell down once and touched the ice another time. I turned it off after that.
ICE skating is way to subjective and staged.
LisaL
(44,973 posts)Even if skater falls, they still get points for attempt. Just not as much as if the jump was clean.
underpants
(182,758 posts)Rippon's routine was much more athletic and at least as stylistic as Chan's.
LisaM
(27,801 posts)I was trying to think of a comparison - the closest I could come to was the two and three point shots in basketball. Giving the same score for two different jumps would be like allowing only two points for a shot from half court.

(8,421 posts)So I decided just to enjoy it. He was awe inspiring.
Retrograde
(10,132 posts)he lost points for being overly sequins-ed, but I thought he paid more attention to the music than the Russian and Italian - and he didn't actually fall down, which gets points in my world.
That's my problem with judged events - it often comes down to the judges' prejudices (and I say this as someone who has spent a lot of time assisting county fair judges - in the end, it comes down to "I like this one better"
TomSlick
(11,096 posts)I do know music. Rippon expressed the music and made you "feel" the music. It was all just too beautiful.
