Dollar General manager fired after sharing post about unionizing

https://labortribune.com/dollar-general-manager-fired-after-sharing-post-about-unionizing/

Glasgow, MO – A former Dollar General manager is speaking out after she said she was fired for sharing a post about employees unionizing.

Workers at a Dollar General store in Auxvasse, MO, voted to join United Food and Commercial Workers Local 655, in December, becoming the first Dollar General store in the country where employees have successfully voted to unionize.

Margeorie Nation shared a post by a page called Dollar General Mayhem, which linked to an article by KOMU 8 News about the unionization vote by employees at the Auxvasse location.

The copy that accompanied the page’s post included the language: “Finally, it’s a start! I hope this becomes a trend in the rest of the company. S**** your anti-union mission statement, Dollar General.”

1. I truly believe we are going to see an increase in Union activity.

With all of the antiworker nonsense coming out of the Republican party. I think it terrifies management and ownership and it should. Workers unite!

3. "Dollar General manager fired."

How many times have I heard that before?

This job is like, "Who wants to be Number One in Taliban?"

5. They have high turnover.

I've talked to a few, who say they quickly become disillusioned with rigid job demands from higher ups.
Lots of responsibility, minimal opportunity to make any decisions on their own. and that low pay for double the work.

7. I spent a decade in discount retail management, including DG.

It's a real lesson in the "true essence" of functioning capitalism.

4. The flip side is I know of a chap who was fired for sending out a memo criticising unionizing...

It was back in the late 70's, as I recall. I was at a social function, and this chep, who I didn't know well, shared with me a memo he had written that was pretty harsh about an attempt by other employees to unionize. He seemed very proud of it. I asked him if he'd already sent it out. When he said yes, I really didn't have the heart to tell him what a mistake that was.

Sure enough, I ran into him again and he was all indignant that he'd been canned. I don't know if his memo was the cause, but it seemed more than coincidental. He also may have irritated management with his general personality. Again, I didn't find much to say, but privately I felt his firing was probably justified.

Firebrands of any political stripe generally don't last too long in corporate America.
