Trump had hesitated to settle on Pence, who was governor of Indiana. Trump was fielding last-ditch appeals from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and publicly said he had not made a “final, final decision” until advisers like Manafort reminded him of the importance of uniting the GOP around conservative Christian values.

CBS News reported that Pence was Manafort's "first choice" and that Manafort even lied about mechanical problems on Trump's plane to make the soon-to-be GOP nominee stay an extra day in Indiana to get to know Pence. In a phone call, Manafort assured Trump that Pence was the right choice and made a case that won over the real estate tycoon.

Manafort would later downplay his behind-the-scenes choice, telling the Times that Trump never seriously doubted Pence.

Pence would never ask questions and do as he was told. This is a man who is incapable of independent thought or analysis. He does have an instinct for self-preservation. He would know that once he hooked up to this train, he should keep his head down, his mouth shut and never, ever disagree.

I wouldn't be surprised if Pence doesn't come out of this relatively unscathed. 1) he wants to be President. 2) he is probably unelectable on his own. 3) he had his own e-mail issue in Indiana and learned to avoid leaving a trail. Likely limited communication as much as possible to be able to feign ignorance.

I was unaware that the U.S. was in such deep crap with the Russians. Evidently Manafort is some kind of Russian agent? or whatever, and at one time he was Trump's campaign leader. Also, Pence was picked by Manafort. All of this is one incredible scandal, that goes along with Putin's involvement in the 2016 election. Fortunately, Mueller's expertise in investigation along with his team's own experience will expose this.

If indeed the Russians played a decisive role in the 2016 election, if that is true, then this makes Watergate look like a 2nd class burglary by comparison. And, having lived thorough that, believe me, I never thought I could ever say those words. Russian determination as to who is president by fixing election results in key states???? picking the VP.? What else is there to say?

One comment about all of this...If Manafort really is some kind of Russian agent...and he knows a whole lot (that goes without saying) Putin will take care of him. Unless Manafort is under 24 hour house protection with guards)..then Putin will get him. How? When?..who knows? but, Putin will take care of Manafort..Why? to protect Putin's connections. You say that cannot happen? Only if Manafort is under 24 protection...only then.

If not, Putin will get him, or Manafort will take care of himself. Not possible? then you have not read how Putin gets rid of some opponents. It is what he does. The Russians/Soviets have always been good at that..ever hear of Leon Trotsky?..he thought he was safe in Mexico. Trotsky was assassinated in Mexico on Aug 20, 1940. He died a day later. (Trotsky was a leader of the Russian Revolution, and an opponent of Stalin..he moved to Mexico for his own safety, and yes, he did have body guards in the home the day of the assassination by one of Stalin's agents)
