Pennsylvanias Supreme Court released a new congressional map for the Keystone state on Monday afternoon and in the process gave Democrats a likely major boost in their efforts to win back control of the House of Representatives this fall.
The redrawn mapwhich was offered as a legally-mandated fix to the heavily gerrymandered prior linesreshapes the state such that, according to Cook Political Reports Dave Wasserman, there are now eight Hillary Clinton districts and ten Donald Trump districts. President Trump won the state in the 2016 election by less than one percentage point. There are currently five seats held by Democrats and 12 by Republicans, with one vacant.
The map is likely to be the most significant mid-term election development until the actual election itself, seriously enhancing the likelihood that Nancy Pelosi regains her gavel as Speaker. For that, and other reasons, it is also likely to draw a legal challenge from Republicans in the state.

She was a great speaker and got a lot done in her short time as speaker. I just hope she won't hold back from giving Trump and his cabal their due.

(4,267 posts)Anyone with good knowledge of the area: is it doable/possible to go from 5 seats to 9 without an amazing blue wave?

(637 posts)99% sure my district, PA 6, will turn Democratic. The thinking is we should pick up 4 seats without a blue wave. Expect the republicans to try another court challenge.

(5,614 posts)Nancy Pelosi has replaced Hillary Clinton as the boogieman of the right. Isn't there someone able to fit into that slot without tying us so thoroughly to the history of the recent past?
How about a woman of color, pretty much the backbone of the party natiionwide. Relying on the faces and names of the past (almost any of those proposed for leadership in 2016) isn't likely to lead the Party where it has to go into the future.
And no, I'm not a RussBot just looking to spread dissension.

(42,288 posts)Nancy Pelosi is one of the best Speakers/Leaders in generations. Please look at her record before making such pronouncements.
Oh, and the Rs will make anyone a boogeyman. Do you really think they wouldn't demonize another D Speaker?

(36,103 posts)It's true the RW is working itself into a hateful froth about Pelosi. They know they need a new Hillary going into the elections. It's so obvious what they're doing

(42,288 posts)Republicans say bad things about her? Do you really think they won't do the same to any Dem Speaker/Leader?
They hate Pelosi because she is successful, a way better Speaker than their guy Ryan.
Screw them! I support future Speaker Pelosi 100%.

(54,329 posts)That having been said, I want a strong, energetic, forceful speaker who will stand up to our extremist right with an iron will and an abundant set of street smarts.
I do not give a rat's ass if it is a man or a woman or what race they or their ancestors were. Just do the job!!!

"lead the Party where it has to go into the future."
Specifically where? And on what evidence do you allege current leadership is unlikely to move in that direction?

Stop it.

(50,254 posts)This is based on the Pennsylvania state constitution, and rulings based on that aren't supposed to be subject to appeal to SCOTUS.

(14,681 posts)The process used and who draws it. The state constitution charges the legislature to draw the maps.
That's what they will challenge.
Me.
