Charleston (WV) Gazette-Mail bankruptcy cheered by coal mine owners

The Gazette-Mail, for which my father was a columnist and earlier city editor for the Gazette, was at one time ranked the second-most liberal newspaper in the country (a paper in York PA--of all places--was #1). The hard times finally caught up with the Gazette-Mail, and it declared bankruptcy a couple of days ago. The coal industry is delighted. Had this happened during the 1950s, segregationists would have been dancing in the streets.

1. Don Blankenship

the former Massey Energy chief executive who went to jail for conspiring to violate federal safety regulations after the Upper Big Branch accident killed 29 miners in April 2010. Blankenship finished his prison term last year, and he is now running for the U.S. Senate.

2. K & R What a great paper and huge loss for the state. Hope Ward

stays on or continues his vital work in another outlet.

Even harder times coming for the 1.5 mill residents there.
