‘It would open people’s eyes’: CNN’s Cooper makes a bold proposal to bring home the savage reality of what an AR-15 can do
Tom Boggioni
20 Feb 2018 at 23:19 ET

Leading into a discussion on lawmakers refusing to do anything to curb the proliferation of assault weapons, CNN host Anderson Cooper suggested that the harsh reality of what a bullet from an AR-15 can do to a body has been withheld from Americans and that a wake-up call was needed.

The introduction turned into a monologue as an emotional Cooper proposed showing the carnage to “open people’s eyes.”

“One of the things General McChrystal said, I think he said this in the wake of one of the shootings,” Cooper began. “He said a .223-caliber round, when it hits the human body, the effects are just devastating – it’s designed for that. He talked about he didn’t think there was a need for that kind of weaponry on the streets. that was after Newtown.”

Turning to former Republican lawmaker Jack Kingston, Cooper continued, “I often think we don’t focus on the reality of what an AR-15 does to a child. If anyone has been on a battlefield and you see what a weapon like this does to a soldier, if people actually saw this and saw the saw the reality of this, it would open people’s eyes.”

“We all say, ‘oh, these children lost their lives,'” Cooper continued choking up a bit. “They didn’t lose their lives, their lives were were ripped out of their bodies, their brains were splattered on the floor, their intestines were hanging out. It was sickening.”

With the approval of the next of kin, people NEED to see exactly what these types of guns do to the human body. Especially lawmakers and anyone wanting to buy a gun.

Actually, it should be just like when someone gets a DWI. They have to sit through footage of kids who have been killed in drunk driving wrecks. Make it so that if you buy a gun, you have to watch a graphic film that shows the effects of gun violence.

I have seen and directly prepared bodies for funerals of these types of injuries in my career. (not a mass shooting, I cannot imagine the horror)

It was part of the lesson plan.

And it made you stop and think and get serious REEEEEEEEEALLY fast.

As horrible and grizzly as it sounds, maybe we've come to this. Maybe we need to do this. SEE what those massacre machines do to the human body. SEE FOR YOURSELF. Then try to convince anyone that AR-15's are okay for civilians to own.

to view certain aspects of the operation is an anti-abortion tactic. The requirement that people seeking an assault rifle be required to view certain aspects of ITS operation would be an anti-gun tactic. I think it's perfect.

Lets use a animal carcus and make every NRA member with kids watch it. Starting with Wayne Lapierre, 'MR. NRA' himself. However I don't think, he would pass the mental background check, to purchase one.

Lets use a animal carcus and make every NRA member with kids watch it.

A lot of them are deer hunters and have seen what .30-06, .30-30, and other large-caliber rifle rounds do to animals. It would come as no surprise.

So, everyone legally able to hunt that was born after 1972. It's not that gory anyway.

But against a child... A 250lb deer can soak up multiple hits from a .223, and it's not that messy. Might not even kill it. But a 60-100lb child... incomparable. No I think publishing the crime scene photos would actually be helpful in this case. I can't really see anyone fetishizing it.

who could help them with PTSD -- the carnage was unbelievable (what those guns do to 6-year-old bodies) and many had children of elementary school age. At the time I recall thinking we all needed to see what the freedom to amass "weapons of mass destruction" produces. No shielding the public from that reality. Your society, your lawmakers, your easy access to weapons.

their dead bodies should be shown on every network news show to show the absolute HORROR of what these evil things do.
I've seen pictures of what we did to kids and women in Iraq and I wanted to gag. I know this is America and my wishes can't come true, but every one who owns a gun should be made to watch two hours of children and teens ripped to pieces by these guns.
Sorry if I am offending people with my thoughts, but I am so angry that I live next to people who do not care if OTHER peoples kids are murdered as long as they can keep their guns.

That's another good idea. It just might have to be shoved, forcibly, into their faces. They're coddled like nobody's business, and are surrounded by security on Capitol Hill. They have NO clue.

Granted, one of them actually did get shot. Democrat Gabby Giffords. And nothing was done.

Another one of them actually did get shot, too. republi-CON Steve Scalise. And nothing was done. He himself even said it hadn't changed his mind about maintaining the status quo - not touching the issue of gun violence.

Hell, Ronald Freakin' Reagan got shot! And nothing was done. His security people took bullets for him, too. One of them died. Another was permanently damaged and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Reagan TOO advocated doing nothing! Wouldn't touch it. Several months before this happened to him, John Lennon was shot and killed, and the then-President-Elect bemoaned the tragedy but made sure to add that "...but we can't take anyone's guns."

That smug, smirking, miserable mouth-breather makes me almost makes me gag. I mostly watch MSNBC, except when Andrea "her emails! Her emails" Mitchell comes on.

But CNN has the obnoxious Jack Kingston AND religious fanatic Rick Santorum AND smug jerks like S.E. Cupp on frequently, so it's not possible for me to watch that network for long. Besides, I think they still invite Jodyanne Jerk-me-off (that's what my husband calls Kellyanne Conway) for frequent interviews. That alone is off-putting, just by itself.

The Watergate era taught me "don't buy books by crooks." Motherhood taught me not to reward or reinforce bad behavior. So I don't watch when those jerks are on camera. I refuse to reward them with my viewership. Life's too short!

for the first time. For the first time, mothers and fathers saw bodies torn apart in killing fields, and wondered if their sons were among them. The horror wasn't at arms length, anymore, just statistics. The gore, the blood, the bodies.

One picture is worth a thousand words, they say.

No problem making the NRA puppets face the victims of their whoredom, but not sure about the general public. Maybe some risk that people would get used to it and become desensitized, perhaps some even starting to mock the carnage and torment the families.

that started to end the mistreatment of blacks in the 60s? The video is powerful that shows police pointing water cannons to protesters back in the day that changed America's heart. Maybe some photos of the carnage would do that to these fucking gun nuts.
Sorry, I live in a red state and I'm surrounded by cowards carrying their guns everywhere and I'm sick of it.

Some courageous parent will step forward and release photos. Imagine the foetus waving pickets, then see pickets outside every gun shop in America with the photos of the maimed lifeless body of a child, and outside every GOP office, outside FOX, and in Wayne LaPierre's sweaty face.

Because guns KILL. That's what they're designed to do. Wound, maim, and KILL. Guns don't kill people? People kill people? Yeah. People kill people - WITH GUNS.

And as that most eloquent young high school student, Emma Gonzales, stated recently (after surviving that horrible massacre at her school last week), there wouldn't have been this much death and carnage if the attacker had used a knife.
