Yet Again, WHO THE FUCK

… is stupid enough to believe that the solution to gun violence is more guns?

As always, the answer is Republicans – because that’s always the answer to any question that begins ”Who the fuck is stupid enough …”

Arm teachers? Yeah, that’s the ticket. Why inconvenience would-be school shooters by making them buy their own weapons, which they then have to smuggle into the building? Just simply place dozens of weapons on school property. No fuss, no muss, no messy background checks, or paperwork to be filed – just overtake one teacher who’s carrying, and congratulations – you’re armed and ready to roll!

The father of a girl who was in the school at the time of the shooting gave the most strident speech about what a great thing it would be to have the teachers and staff- right down to the janitor, carrying concealed weapons. He argued that they could then become the first responders and take down the shooter. This was after his daughter told Trump that "the country was going in the right direction and he was a great leader." I am sorry that this girl has suffered a terrible trauma, but this does not seem like a family I would want to know.

What is wrong with people? What kind of weapons do they think these teachers and staff will be able to use against an AR-15?

There was another father, of a girl who died, who also supported this sick idea.

Even after gun violence has touched their own families, they can not bring themselves to address the real problem.

Today I thought about how brave the Bradys' were. fighting the NRA so valiantly after James Brady was shot during the assignation attempt on Ronald Reagan.

And just like addicts they are doing everything they can to distract from the fact that their vice is their problem.

Trump tweet from May 2016.

During a White House listening session with students and parents from Parkland, Florida, President Donald Trump said that one solution to the recent rash of deadly school shootings might be to allow teachers to apply for concealed carry permits, which would allow them to carry concealed weapons on school grounds.

“If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly,” he told the crowd of survivors and families.

that keeps them in power.

And as for the assholes that vote for them, well, they put up with more guns but they get abortion stopped, the gays put back in the closet, aid for the poor reduced and even a wall. What more could they want?

even Police Officers, who who have rigorous firearm training usually miss with a vast majority of their shots in an active shooter situation, because the 'bad guy with a gun' is not just standing still waiting to be shot, but is actively trying NOT to get shot.

Also,

Where does the teacher have the gun? In a hip holster? Concealed? Locked up?

When is it legal for a teacher to fire? Before the bad guy with a gun opens fire? Or do they need to wait until the actual shooting starts? Do the have a 'duty to warn' before firing?

The teacher has to make sure the area around the shooter is clear of students and faculty before opening fire, since the teacher probably wants to be careful they don't shoot anyone but the shooter, whereas the shooter is under no such constraint.

The teacher is armed with a handgun, the shooter with a semi-automatic, so the teacher has to pray they find the shooter with his back to the teacher. What if the shooter is wearing a bullet proof vest? Should teachers also be provided with vests?

Why isn't the NRA cheering this idea? There are currently approx 3.2 million full-time teachers in the U.S. If we arm 20% of them, that's 640,000 new handguns that need to be obtained, 640,000 teachers trained on the proper use of these new handguns, enough ammunition to load all of these new guns, etc.

One last question. Where are all these guns kept when school is not in session? Do the teachers take them home? If so, that's a whole lot of gun safes. Does the school lock them up at night? What happens when someone breaks in and robs the school? Guess we will need additional (armed) security to keep the bad guys out at night and over the summer.

What could possibly go wrong with such a great idea?

autonomic nervous system is its own worst enemy since it floods the body with adrenaline, which among other things make the hands shake and thus makes accurately aiming a weapon virtually impossible.* The way groups like SWAT and Special Forces overcome this is by systematic and repeated rigorous training with the weapon until their response becomes automatic. Without this continuous training you get the extremely common phenomenon seen in Police shootings where shots fired by officers hit just about everything except the intended target. Now, multiply this by a factor of at least 10 to see what result you might expect from an untrained (or minimally trained) teacher who is expected to face an armed assailant and effectively neutralize the assailant with precision fire.

Ridiculous from the outset.

* After I posted this I read a later post this morning by DUer CATTLEDOG, an Infantryman wounded in combat during his service in Afghanistan. His personal experience showcases this phenomenon much better than I ever could. In his words:

"Few people actually run towards gunfire. Most search for cover. Some can’t function. Fight or flight. Adrenaline floods your body. Time doesn’t exist. Your heart beats outside of your chest. Fine motor skills stop working. People urinate and defecate themselves. Good luck holding steady aim at a moving target. Even the simplest of tasks, such as reloading can become difficult. Your hands shake for hours afterward. It’s chaotic on a level that is beyond comprehension until you experience it. "
