(6,474 posts)IRS definition of "exempt purposes"
The exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3) are charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition, and preventing cruelty to children or animals. The term charitable is used in its generally accepted legal sense and includes relief of the poor, the distressed, or the underprivileged; advancement of religion; advancement of education or science; erecting or maintaining public buildings, monuments, or works; lessening the burdens of government; lessening neighborhood tensions; eliminating prejudice and discrimination; defending human and civil rights secured by law; and combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency.

Donations to them, however, are NOT tax deductible.

(34,062 posts)I'm associated with a group that has dual status - one arm that is a C(3) - educational entity (so donations to it are tax deductible), and the other is a lobbying entity - and deductions to it are NOT deductible.
But neither pays taxes on their income (a common theme between C(3) and C(4) entities.

Just kidding. I don't give a fuck about their tax status. Guess that makes me an idiot with little concern about the topic itself. I did assume it was a non-profit. I have no idea what it really is with respect to corporate status.

(17,002 posts)Made me wonder if there's a way to challenge that. Maybe the ACLU or Southern Poverty Law Center could do something? The KKK was pretty much shut down in Alabama when they lost a civil lawsuit that basically bankrupted them.

(11,175 posts)As Ms. Toad pointed out in #8, this means that the organization doesn't pay taxes on its income, but contributions are not tax-deductible (unlike a c3).
The Brady Campaign is also a c4.
In #4, Phoenix61 wonders if the ACLU could go after the NRA on this score. Well, guess what -- the ACLU is also a c4 organization. The ACLU would be, if you'll pardon the expression, shooting itself in the foot.
If your position on issue advocacy groups is that those that agree with you should get favorable tax treatment, but such treatment should be denied to those that disagree with you, all I can say is that that's not the law, nor should it be.

The NRA Action Fund is not tax exempt and supports political campaigns.
This is a similar arrangement to Planned Parenthood.
