They werent buying what he was selling: Wayne LaPierre stopped speech to ask young conservatives why they werent cheering
Scarborough said the NRA spokesman had convinced some gun owners that federal authorities were jack-booted thugs who wanted to disarm Americans but a New York Times reporter who covered CPAC said this latest speech appeared to fall flat.
He was stoking these fears not just of Second Amendment infringements, but of trampling and confiscation of individual liberties across the board, said reporter Jeremy Peters. Thats what he said, and its an interesting shift in strategy for a group like the NRA which no longer has a president in the White House to demean and to demonize and to make an enemy of, so what theyve done is theyve said, Okay, theres a much broader conspiracy its no longer coming just from the Democrats, its coming from the media, its coming from the intel community, its coming from the government and they are going to get you, and the ultimate goal is to take your guns.'
But the speech didnt seem to go over well with younger conservative activists, Peters said, prompting LaPierre to re-enact Jeb Bushs infamous please clap moment.
The room was not with Wayne LaPierre yesterday, Peters said. Actually, at one point he stopped and he said, I sense its a little quiet out there. It was quiet, he said, because they must be scared and all gun owners should be. But the reason they were quiet is because they werent buying what he was selling.

(2,275 posts)What does this mean: "the face of View profile armed America.".... it's got a lot of weird, unfamiliar references. Maybe some boring old grammar would help. Not trying to be a pain, just super curious what all of that means...

(24,324 posts)I did a copy and paste of Hoyt's comment in order to change LaPierre to Republicans.
And his 'profile' photo became part of the COPY and I didn't proof read it and... kersplert..
Should have been--
"REPUBLICAN needs to be made the face of armed America."
Thanks

(22,065 posts)I never could understand the need for weapons that spew out bullets so fast, that it made your head spin. The NRA is so out of touch w/ reality and has blinded itself to what's happening in American streets and neighborhoods throughout the country. Not all of our neighborhoods have rabbits nibbling on our garden veggies and thus must be killed at once, nor do I see rampant crime running amok through the streets of this country either.
What I do see, is kids, depressed, upset, or somehow 'something' go to the weapon of their choice (usually a gun unfortunately), and taking it 'out' on everyone around them, seemingly every week.
300 million guns in the country and still not enough for the NRA. Yet, w/ so many legal guns in the hands of our citizens, where are all of the good guys (w/ guns) when crimes of this horrendous nature occur? Where? In the one sad case of the FL incident, one armed guard has been fired for failing to do their duty when the FL killings was happening. Perhaps too much gun for the guard to handle (in Cruz's hands)?
The NRA has the excuse that all guns are legal, for defense of one's self and home, via the 2nd Amendment,
but the 2nd Amendment is being flouted and abused so much, in that all guns were acceptable in the hands of non-militia personnel, not just the militia. Guns need to be classified into categories, as defensive in nature (small hand pistols and the like), or mass weapons of destruction (perhaps measured by speed and power that
bullets are delivered to the target). Depending on how these guns are classified, then the appropriate steps can be undertaken. I would think law enforcement would welcome this, as well as the numerous victims of gun violence.
I seem to remember a saying 'violence begets more violence'. Seems appropriate here. Ah, just my 2 cents' worth.
Maine's governor is trying to hijack the serious discussions about guns and violence in this country. He needs to settle down and get a life.
