My red state is steeped in gun culture. In fact, the GOP in my county got some national attention by raffling off an AR-15 at a Republican fundraiser - after the Florida massacre.
I attended my local county Democratic party meeting last night. The Chair made a request that our candidates replace "gun control" with "gun safety" in their statements. I think it's a good idea. About time we stop letting the right always frame the conversation.

(22,990 posts)Guns are out of control in this country. Gun safety is best used for limited use about how to handle, store, and operate gun weapons.
Edit: in red areas like you describe, maybe remind them of how scared they might be of foreign terrorists getting auto, semi-auto, or any large magazine weapons. Gun safety and terrorists don't mix well.

(935 posts)Government control has been turned into a bad phrase around here for decades, from Reagan's "Government IS the problem" onward. The GOP already framed it. I don't see how changing that lets them do it again. To pick up your point, we frame control = safety (I would argue = freedom to go to public events without fear of being killed), whereas for GOP control = government overreach.
