US must stop drone attacks says Professor Khurshid Ahmad

The future of Pakistan and its relationship with the US and neighbouring countries has been a topic of discussion over the past few years. The US has continued its drone strikes on Pakistan’s territory. This has greatly strained US-Pakistan relations.

Pakistan is being accused by the US to have sheltered Usama bin Laden and interfering in Afghanistan. On the other hand, the bitterness over India’s occupation of Kashmir and interruptions of Pakistan’s water supply has made the relationship between the two neighbours quite hostile.

The Muslim News spoke to the former Pakistan Senator, Professor Khurshid Ahmad and Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami in Pakistan about these concerns. Professor Ahmad retired from Parliament on March 11.

After a reception held by the UK Islamic Mission in Birmingham honouring Professor Ahmad for his life-long services to Islam - in particular, for his contributions in scholarly research related to Islamic economics and Islamic movements - he expressed his views to The Muslim News on the situation in Pakistan.

As a former member of the Pakistan’s Parliamentary Committee on National Security, he dealt with many underlying issues affecting the country. Many civilians have been caught up in US drone strikes over the years, which have become more frequent since 2008. Although Pakistan’s Government called for an end to these strikes in April, and the Pakistan people continued protests, the US has shown no sign in halting these strikes
