General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDo any of you have opinions about Tom Steyer, of NeedToImpeach.com?
His (to me) thoughtful ads have been appearing on daytime CNN for months.
Is this leading anywhere?
Does he have personal ambitions?

(13,412 posts)If he is raising his profile or shining a light on 45's crimes, then he's more successful.
I would prefer that he spend his money registering people to vote, especially in places like AZ, FL, GA, NC and TX.

(37,748 posts)The important thing is we respond to the question without actually knowing the goal. And inform our presences as to what that goal should be... again, without actually knowing the goal.

(53,061 posts)just like they did Nixon.
Right now polls are showing approval for impeachment up to about 55% so it probably is having an impact.
He is assembling a good data base of people with like minded thoughts on the subject.

(6,374 posts)I signed it, but I'm not really sure what the point of it was.

(44,996 posts)but his money might be better spent combatting local Republican corruption and helping elect new Democratic House and Senate leaders.

(5,811 posts)I have signed the petition and have consistently encouraged others to do the same. We'll only get media attention for it if can get at 30-60 million people to sign on. Here's the thing I don't understand. On FB, on Twitter and here, people are constantly talking about how they can't wait the impeach the muthaphucker but they haven't signed the damn petition.
We need people to sign it so when we get that BLUE WAVE in November there's overwhelming evidence we want that piece of shit in the WH impeached.

(19,949 posts)rammed home. I believe he's backing candidates as well and as long as he isn't targeting democratic incumbents, then that's great too.

(5,811 posts)5,024,843 have signed the petition so far.

(56,828 posts)I think the millions he has spent would better have been used supporting Democrats running for House and Senate, and expanding and improving friendly GOTV operations.

(102,190 posts)I think they could be a lot more effective if they didn't just focus on him as spokesperson...
I do think he is quite sincere, however.

(2,559 posts)To get anything done in this nation, sincerity and honest are all well and good, but glitz, humor, and charm are better persuaders.
I agree we need first need to neuter Trump legislatively.

...and he's pissing off Trump to no end. He's seeing those ads as often as we are.

(24,216 posts)like Frank Purdue.
If he was just about the issues we wouldn't see his freaking face in every spot.
These are "look at me" political ads.
Mark me down as not impressed.

(2,678 posts)he should also go after any, and all, Republicans. Why are they so reluctant to do anything. Id really go after Turtle McConnell and the Speaker, plus others. And theres plenty of corrupt Rethugs! 👿

(3,490 posts)but the wording should be stronger. His messages end softly, saying essentially, "someone should do something." He needs a good catchphrase to make his ads memorable.

(31,261 posts)He seems to be the real deal, not a "cause" jumper. But I think other rich people like the late Paul Newman and living people like John Bon Jovi do a better job of making real lasting change.
Steyer is a renowned investment management guy, he could personally funds efforts to find new clean energy technologies and technological methods for reversing the effects of climate change (capture before gases get to the atmosphere, high atmosphere gas specific savaging technology). But he seems more interested in spending his money on politics exclusively, which is ok, but often suffer setbacks that are major.
TeamPooka
(24,216 posts)but I'm a cynical kind of guy at heart.
I've seen too many rich guys say "I have enough money, let's get some power and influence since I'm so rich I must be smart and important."

(1,202 posts)Don't you think that there is possible a genuine dislike from Trump and they simply have the money to tout that dislike?

(1,202 posts)If this type of persuasion didn't work, we'd never ever see another commercial on TV even again. Not that I'd mind that of course, but there is a reason companies spend millions on ads. It sways and persuades. The Right sure has it's propagandists in Fox news. This guy is doing the Left a service in letting the non MSNBC, non FOX News viewers get another, and may I add, a true window into the Trump problem.

(71 posts)I met him some 10 years ago as an allocator into farallon. He was stepping down. He told me that he had informed his children that the only inheritance they would get is a decent planet and that he would spend all of his wealth defending it. He understood early on the immense impact of climate change and the GOP assault on our planet. His view was that the most effective way was to change political resolve and that his money would be spent to change politics. I cant say of his political ambition but at the heart of his involvment there is climate change. And he is clearly following through.
