Hatch apologizes for 'off-color' comment about 'dumbass' ObamaCare supporters

BY PETER SULLIVAN - 03/02/18 03:56 PM EST

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on Friday apologized for calling supporters of ObamaCare the "the stupidest, dumbass people I’ve ever met."

"Yesterday, I made a poorly worded joke about Obamacare supporters—a joke that was not reflective of my actual feelings towards my friends on the other side," Hatch said in a statement.

“[We] finally did away with the individual mandate tax that was established under that wonderful bill called ObamaCare,” Hatch said during his remarks. “Now, if you didn’t catch on, I was being very sarcastic. That was the stupidest, dumbass bill that I’ve ever seen.”

“Some of you may have loved it,” he continued. “If you do, you are one of the stupidest, dumbass people I’ve ever met. And there are a lot of them up there on Capitol Hill from time to time.”

In fact, it makes it somewhat worse, because his original remarks assumed a great deal of whitewashing of history. To-wit (as I posted yesterday when he made these insulting comments):

Because you and your corporate-enthralled buddies in the Republican party demanded that insurance companies stay in the health care business. Insurance companies don't contribute one positive thing to the delivery of health care, but you and your dollar-addicted cronies had an absolute hissy fit over insurance companies getting cut out of the process.

So, in exchange for leaving insurance companies in the loop, the ACA required that insurance policies had to actually cover something (that basic benefits package, including preventive care and annual check-ups), and that everyone had to participate, even able-bodied invincible young people who never make insurance claims. This was to widen the pool of participants, and lower costs for everyone. Of course, you and your spoiled brat ilk immediately began bad-mouthing the individual mandate you had forced on the bill, and advised young people that it would be cheaper to pay the penalty than to buy insurance that actually covered them.

Then, after all those attempts at sabotage, and holding your breath until you got your way, after all the gathering of testimony, after all the effort to make the ACA serve as many as possible at the lowest cost in spite of your monkey-wrenching of the bill, not a goddam one of you Republicans voted for the final package.

That makes you a cruel, greedy, short-sighted asshole, Orrin.
