Supply and demand should ensure that we never run out of people to do the really key jobs. If there was a dire shortage of, say, potato chip flavor developers (don't panic, this is strictly theoretical), chip companies would make the salary and perks of the job more attractive, colleges would hype up the benefits of majoring in flavor science, and new blood would enter the field, bringing with them the caramel-and-Worcestershire-sauce-flavored Pringles we truly deserve. But reality is nowhere near that efficient, and we are running out of people for some especially vital jobs. For example ...

The Demand For Oncologists Skyrockets While Supply Plummets
We're Short On Farm Labor
Nobody Wants To Be A Skilled Manufacturer Anymore
We Don't Have Nearly Enough Pilots To Meet Our Demand For Air Travel
Some of these problems are being made worse by Trump/GOP. It would be great to have rail as an alternative to air travel. It would be great to have training and apprenticeship programs for skilled manufacturing like those job stealers in Europe have. And maybe less demonization of such work. Many farm workers are getting Trumped out of the country, so farms look towards machine harvesting and grow less labor intensive crops.
One of COBOL's main designers was a woman. And stupid people still promote the lie that women/girls don't want to code and try to discourage them. There are probably some who might want to try it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_E._Sammet https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Hopper

(17,984 posts)So maybe I should invest more time in learning Javascript.
I'm glad you posted this because my tendency is to believe there are plenty of programmers out there.

(8,614 posts)I suspect there are plenty of programmers young and old that know javascript.
Its funny javascript was a second class programming language back in the early days of the web.. now its become one of the main components of most online software systems.

(17,984 posts)I kind of made my choice to stick with front end, but maybe it would be advantageous to be well rounded instead of just super good at Javascript. The computer science programs in the schools lean toward producing a well rounded graduate, which is why the other students in the class I was taking were into Python and C++. I just wanted to dabble.

(45,380 posts)The lack of COBOL programmers was an issue when I was in college 15 years ago. Many schools still taught that language to Management Information Systems majors because of its prevalence in the financial industry and many older companies. It's not as sexy as Java, Python, C++, and others.

(22,005 posts)I don't recruit I.T. people anymore, but I can tell you that in the last 20 years, companies have been loathe to hire old programmers, except as contractors. They want the college kids with the newest whiz bang technologies.
As far as farm labor, ICE is rounding them all up.

(19,429 posts)So you need to know the whole IBM mainframe software stack, not just Cobol language.
It's been awhile, but the strategy seemed to be to send this work to India, where outsourcing companies were training mainframe programmers.
By outsourcing the maintenance of these systems, it was easier to replace and shut them down because you didn't have US employees to fire. Instead, you hired new staff with training in the new technology to build the replacement applications.

(14,488 posts)Many tRump administration policies and executive actions will worsen cancer rates in this country.
Promoting coal and weakening the EPA, weakening of worker health and safety regs, poor support for education in general, refusing to hold corporations accountable for anything....this list goes on and on.
All those massive tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy? IMO, rates should have increased instead, and much of the new revenue put into education.
