Democrats question Levi Sanders running for Congress in a district he doesnt live in

http://www.concordmonitor.com/How-can-Levi-Sanders-who-lives-in-the-west-of-NH-run-in-CD1-to-the-east-15929819

Levi Sanders made national headlines as he announced his bid for the U.S. House in New Hampshire’s First Congressional District.

When you have a famous father – Levi’s the son of U.S. senator and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders – it’s only natural.

But here in the Granite State – Sanders’s announcement also grabbed attention – and some derision – because he lives in Claremont, near the Vermont border and far from the First District, which covers the eastern part of the state.

While it’s uncommon for a candidate to live outside the district in which they’re running, it is legal. The U.S. Constitution only mandates that House members reside in the state they serve.

Sanders also made news by becoming the eighth Democratic candidate – including two strong supporters of his father’s 2016 White House bid – to try and succeed retiring four-term Democratic Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter.

I will state I voted for HRC. That, however, has little to do with my impression of LS which is not favorable. The only connection to HRC is his criticism of Chelsea for freely stating her views. 1st Amendment Levi and if you want to be a member of Congress that is a basic need to know. In addition, other tweets of his leave me unimpressed, I believe NH can do better than him.

Off the top of my head...Chelsea. Obama. Harris. McCaullife. Hillary. A few pretty big names.

Also:

Levi’s tweets criticizing “identity politics,” resenting the invocation of the phrase “white privilege,” and downplaying the importance of nominating a woman as the 2020 Democratic nominee are an awkward fit in a Democratic primary. But they represent a broader tendency with the broader Bernie movement that Bernie himself has tried to downplay or pivot away from.

A mainly class-based analysis. And while I share his economic analysis to a large degree, I feel he fails to make the linkage between economics and race/gender discrimination.

I feel that the 1% use race and sex (and other things as well) as a method to divide workers and permit the rich to exploit workers. So that is a class based analysis, but any class based analysis must also recognize how racism and sexism are the primary ways to divide.

In fact, there's plenty of evidence to suggest that he's cool with racism, if not a full-on apologist for white supremacists.

Oh, here he is praising Dana Loesch.

Here he is decrying the removal of the confederate flag from the VA license plate.

Here he is attacking Pres. Obama on surveillance. Sound like someone we know?

Here he is praising Trump for tapping into people's "anger and pain".

And on and on.

Fuck Levi Sanders.

But historically he is a progressive.

In the last decade or so very liberal Democrats have taken to calling themselves progressives to distinguish themselves from more moderate democrats.

The problem with that is the progressive movement is well over 100 years old and for most of that time social Justice issues were not helpful to their economic causes at best and often seen as an impediment.

My dad grew up liberal in the depression south and hated southern progressives with their chicken in every pot...and keep the blacks in their place. Northerners who today call themselves progressive yet lack that historical knowledge are today often confused and sometimes outright hostile at Southern African Americans of a certain age rejecting progressives.

From what I have seen, and in my opinion only, that original strain of progressivism remain alive and well within parts of the movement.

NOT on DU now. But 2 years ago, hell yeah.

Call me a liberal

Call me a leftist

Please call me a Social Democrat.

Do not call me a progressive.

In fact, I posted yesterday about all of the anti-Bernie bullshit that is not just here, but abundantly clear has become a priority on the agenda.

However:

Candidates running in a district they don’t live in or have a serious record with, at best, is irksome. Often it’s a warning sign.

That asshole in Illinois being challenged by a progressive? Doesn’t bother me. That progressive in Houston moving back to her hometown that got trashed by the DCCC? She doesn’t bother me, because it was her home for a long time.

This one has me suspicious.

ideologues. Eyes on the prize, these asshats don’t move the progressive cause forward. All they do is promote Republicans.

. If a “progressive“ is retweeting a rightwing NRA mouthpiece he is not a progressive. I don’t care if his name is SANDERS

If some ideologue tells you liberal Dems are the enemy rather than reactionary Republicans, then reject that liar, rather then thinking it is cool to repeat that fucked up nihilistic nonsense here at Du or to your friends irl. It isn’t “cool” or “edgy” it is dangerous, and some day you will live to regret it.
