CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An online petition is calling for a national holiday to honor the late Rev. Billy Graham and has over 34,000 signatures in support.
The petition, posted on change.org, calls on Donald Trump, Richard Burr, Thom Tillis and Congress to enact a national holiday to commemorate the impact of Rev. Graham.
The petition, posted six days ago by Kyle Siler, states the following:
Lets get a National Holiday for Billy Graham!! Mr. Graham preached the Gospel to more people in live audiences than anyone else in historynearly 215 million people in more than 185 countries and territoriesthrough various meetings, including Mission World and Global Mission. Hundreds of millions more have been reached through television, video, film, and webcasts. Mr. Grahams counsel was sought by presidents, and his appeal in both the secular and religious arenas is evidenced by the wide range of groups that have honored him, including numerous honorary doctorates from many institutions in the U.S. and abroad.

Donations that were most likely not reported accurately to the IRS.

(13,485 posts)PeeWee Herman deserves a monument on the mall. But I can think of better national entertainers to commemorate... like George Carlin day.
That's all Grayham and his ilk are; they're high priced, untaxed, brainwashing entertainers.

(25,908 posts)(Playboy, perhaps?) in which he stated his firm belief that the rapture would occur during his lifetime, ensuring that he wouldn't suffer a physical death. He surely didn't remember that earlier assertion as he lay croaking like any ordinary mortal.

(33,484 posts)as the MLK holiday represents a day for African Americans.
This can be a holiday honoring all the anti-Semitic, power worshipping assholes.

(146,262 posts)Nothing more than that. We will hear arguments like, "Well MLK got a holiday. So should Billy Graham!" I guarantee it. The difference is that MLK made history. Billy Graham just made money as a tent revivalist gone big-time.
This is obscene!

(10,130 posts)Graham was able to "reach" so many people because he came along at the beginning of the television age, but huckstering preachers have been an American thing since, well, the beginning of America (Joseph Smith, anyone?).
If we're going to have a new holiday, I suggest one honoring P.T. Barnum.

"Billy Graham made an impact on millions of people. He deserves the honor."
"A man that has changed millions of lives and has made such an impact on the world deserves a national Holiday."
"I believe in the power of Jesus Christ just as this man did. And it's time to put Christ back in first place in this country so that we as Christians can continue this wonderful mans legacy."
Three of the above identified their locations as either North or South Carolina.
