1. I think he's significant - maybe not so much for what he knows, but

because Mueller can make an example of him. Nunberg says he won't go to jail if he doesn't comply with the subpoena. Mueller can be sure that he does, just to remind others of what can happen if they try to blow him off.

...I think Nunberg himself is going all-out to appear unstable, in the hope prosecutors will decide he's thoroughly unreliable and dismiss him. Sort of like how a murderer, once apprehended, might feign insanity in the hope of being found incompetent to stand trial.
