If Texas Turns Blue, It Starts Tonight: Three Districts to Watch

If Texas Turns Blue, It Starts Tonight: Three Districts to Watch
A trio of House seats may bring Democrats the wins they’ve always dreamed of in the deep red state.
Gideon Resnick 03.06.18 5:00 AM ET

Democrats eager to retake the House majority in the midterm elections have turned their eyes to Texas, which will hold the first primaries of 2018 on Tuesday.

The party, buoyed by fervent nationwide enthusiasm, has seen an enormous uptick already in early voting in a number of Texas’ most populous counties. In the state’s 15 largest counties, almost 50,000 more Democrats than Republicans have already cast votes. Compared to the number of Democrats who voted early in the 2014 midterm cycle, their early vote numbers this year are up 105 percent.

While Democrats hope their vote totals come in bunches on Tuesday, they’re specifically keeping a close eye on three House districts which could be key on their path to seeking the majority. In all three, Hillary Clinton won in the 2016 presidential election.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is also on the ballot as is his likely general election opponent Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX).

Cruz recently warned: "The left is going to show up. They will crawl over broken glass in November to vote.”

The Texas Republicans know what they're in for, and will throw as much broken glass in our path as they can possibly find, and there are a LOT of beer bottles in Texas.

Wealthiest part of the city. Home to old money & oil billionaires.

That she won thos district say more about the growth & strength of outlying areas perhaps.
And that is a big deal in a republican area.

Any one of the Dems running for that seat will be a great elected official
They're All fine people.
It will be a def blow to Tx Repubs if Pete Sessions would lose this to a Dem.

Early voting looks really strong today

The demographics are against them. New wave of voters coming up this year and 2020. I believe they are in trouble in this state. Can only imagine how much happiness I'd have knowing my home state finally went blue.

I think it's unlikely since it's not a presidential year, but I think if dems can win in red areas here, Abbott loses along with Cruz. I think that'll be telling. 2020 will fair better considering people will want to vote in whoever runs against the GOP. If it's still Dump or if it's Pence.

You know, it is pretty funny to watch the primary ads. The GOP is running on finally doing things Dems have been trying to do for ages. They are framing it as action that Dems hate, but the GOP is going to now be able to get done. The funny part is that the GOP has been in complete control for over 20 years and has prided itself on not doing any of these things. I would LOVE to see the Dems carry the state, but I fear there is still too much hate and ignorance for this to happen (holding out hope, though!).

Sounds like you will also be happy for more of the good people of Texas to reject the rotten corruption of a once-great party to join us, even if they decline to actually go blue at this time.

I think Georgia and Arizona were close enough in 2016 to be in play for 2020. No idea on the historic Georgia governor's race yet, though.

with the great job market, low cost of living and thriving local economy here i wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
Texas is a non-voting Democratic state. It actually had more Democratic governors (you can google this). Unfortunately our last one was Ann Richards. The GOP with their southern strategy and influx of midwesterners since the '60s who brought with them their conservative values, over time they've been successful at turning Tx red by getting conservative voters out to the polls better than Dems have the past 40 years. The local Democratic party have been complacent. BUT there's hope now with this Blue Wave. Early voting Dems turnout numbers have exceeded last election cycle by 100%. We'll see what the latest numbers are after today but i'm hopeful we can at least turn the state purple.

I'm in Ft. Worth but flying home to SF tomorrow. The TV ads show this Huffines guy being a Trump clone, agreeing with everything Trump stands for. I'm curious to see what happens to this guy. He's one of those "I won't take a salary or benefits" guys.

Also the phone hasn't stopped ringing this week. Robocalls about wingnuts touting "S/he shares our Texas values," which means "we hate the same people you hate."
