While I was at a caucus last night at one of our local high schools of about 2000 students, I was awed at how large and how indefensible it would be. Very long narrow hall ways. Hiding places all over the place. A large open areas on lower levels completely open to gun fire from above where there was little cover. The cafeteria area was vulnerable and would a free fire zone.
Teachers trying to isolate a gunman would have no cover and would have to progress down long hallways with no cover at all. Pursing a gunman with a semi automatic up or down open stairwells would be suicide. Getting a close shot would be nearly impossible without exposing yourself.
Even though I am no expert by any means, I could not see how you could do much in a shooting situation. Plus the gunman would have a lot of places to hide and could use students as shields very easily.
Plus with so many armed teachers accidental shootings would be very likely as we have already seen today. And no one can answer how a SWAT team or the police would ID who was a shooter. Do they wear beanies.
Also if the shooter had any body armor you could not take them down without a precise head shot. It is hard to hit anything more than 25 feet away with a hand gun when you are in motion. I remember practicing with my 45 caliber hand gun in Vietnam. It was very difficult to hit something at 25-30 feet standing still and taking aim. I tried to hit an easy target at fairly close range. I got close.
I do not know how this insanity continues. It is so var beyond stupid. We should be ridiculing these morons on the spot.
Finally, so we harden schools. But what about the rest of the commons? What about the rest of our public areas? I know just arm everyone.
I would have to just jump up and down and scream at one of these pricks.
ADDENDUM. Now do we arm the students at our colleges? What about the professors on wide open campuses? Also do we give campus police AR15's.

(694 posts)I like it the way it is. My son loves it!
While vigilance is important, we must resist the urge to go overboard.
I fear my son being hit by a car more than his being caught up in a school shooting.
Having said that, we intend to march on the 24th of March.
My intent is not to trivialize.
