Anyone else feel like this Trump - Kim Jong Un meeting is a setup?

Last edited Fri Mar 9, 2018, 01:54 PM - Edit history (2)

I feel like Putin is the one who's really pulling the strings here. Especially when he revealed that he's got a giant smart missile called "Satan 2" that is aimed right at us. It's a classic smoke and mirrors technique - get all the attention on Un and Trump so Putin can continue his evil deeds. Something has to be done about that mad man - he's drunk with power and extremely dangerous. And I feel like sanctions aren't enough.

It reminds me of a classic Bill Hicks bit where he says "I like what the puppet on the left says. No, I like the puppet on the right more. Hey there's one guy holding up both puppets! Shut up! Go back to bed, your government is in control!". Trump is one puppet, Kim Jong Un is the other puppet, and Vlad is the guy who's pulling both of their strings.

And everyone knows that Trump is grossly unqualified to hold these talks, and everyone knows that Un will try to call Trump's bluff. And for a guy who made his living in the casino industry, we all know Trump has the world's worst poker face. He will be walking straight into a trap.

allow this without major concessions and changes.

Second, Putin decides EVERYTHING trump does outside of our irrelevant domestic stuff, and most of our domestic stuff is NOT irrelevant to Vlad so he decides most everything, including and especially this meeting.

make things worse unless trump calls him ugly names on TV, insults his wife (if Little Kim has one), or something equally vile.

I've kind of grown tired of our posturing when we are the only country to have ever nuked anyone.

But, I also get the risks. If we are going to get eggs on our face, I'd just as soon it be trump's ugly mug.

Trump regularly calls Kim names on TV.
Trump has insulted the wife of an ally (called Macron's wife sexy right in front of him, and on a hot mic).

Notice how North Korean missles improved including the rapid development of solid fuel boosters when it took the United States and Soviet Union decades to develop that technology. The rapid development of smaller more powerful nuclear warheads is also suspicious. We have been neutered by spies, and domestic traitors working for a foreign hostile power. Khrushchev was right and we have been effectively buried.

16. Absolutely. This is Putin throwing Trump a bone and Jong-Un a bigger bone.

Mar 2018

This set-up began months ago when Putin started publicly emphasizing his countries "advances" in nuclear capability....the larger megaton weapons, supersonic cruise missile, diagrams of a nuclear torpedo. Then he announced his position on nuclear attacks on any Russian allies. He stated that he would consider it an attack on Russia itself and respond in kind.
At first I saw this as a ham-handed attempt to intimidate the West. But now I see it differently. This announcement sort of cemented his role as the leader of his own version of NATO. It also gave North Korea a lot more wiggle room as to how aggressive it's nuclear program would need to be. Why should NK continue to expend its scarce resources on nuclear arms when they can live safely under Russian protection? The wiser course would be to call for negotiations with the aim of undoing economic sanctions. So, they give up nothing, plug a hole in the economy and gain worldwide stature as an equal with the United States, all with no risk.
Meanwhile, Trump needs two things:
A distraction from the Russia investigation.
A "win" of some kind that his base can use to justify continued support.

So not only is Putin throwing Trump a bone, but Trump has no choice but to take it. How would it look in the eyes of the world if he refused to talk?

But have no doubt, the bone with the most meat on it went to Kim Jong-Un. If there is such a thing as "face," he just gained a great deal of it. The President of the United States......is coming to him.

What did Putin get? Unlimited license to sell his oil and gas to a North Korea, now flush with cash due to the ending of sanctions.

and Trump will be totally snowed by the VIP treatment and give away the store.
Not only is Trump unqualified to participate; the State Dept's expert on North Korea recently retired because of disagreements with T's warmongering. Not to mention all the diminished diplomatic staff at State generally. So there is literally no one to mind the store (or, more importantly, to mind the Infant in Chief).

Piece by Robin Wright in the New Yorker:
https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/trump-accepts-north-koreas-audacious-invitation-but-then-what

. . .the new U.S.-North Korean track is backward diplomatically. A summit of leaders is usually the reward rather than the starting point. Normally, months or even years of diplomatic legwork are required to work out terms to be formally approved by heads of state. The Clinton Administration spent years working on phases of a deal to curtail North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, which included a trip by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to Pyongyang. A visit by President Clinton was supposed to be the final deal-maker.
As it is currently set up, President Trump has everything to lose if he comes away without tangible and extensive gains that meet his long-standing demand for North Korea to abandon the world’s deadliest weapon. Kim, who leads the world’s most isolated country, has everything to gain from the stature that comes from a summit with the world’s leading superpower.. .

Kim gets free of sanctions for giving up a nuclear program he no longer needs, thanks to Putin's umbrella.

Sanction free NK can buy more of Putin's gas and oil due to financial relief. Plus Kim gets elevated staus from Pillsbury doughboy to world leader. Also permanent stature at home. Putin shows how his armaments influence world events.

Trump gets a needed distraction, an ego boost and some lessening of his badly tarnished image word wide. Solidifies his base and approval ratings.

As I said in another post, Putin threw them both a bone. Putin cashes in.
