they controlled a huge chunk of the world back in the day. Looks like the US didn't learn from their mistakes.

the treasure home. The US empire has always SPENT national treasure (tax$$$$) on maintaining its empire.

Almost all of which (I think 52) were once under British rule. Then there are several other countries (like the USA, Egypt, Kuwait, Iraq, etc.) that were once under British rule and are not part of the Commonwealth, so that would put the number at least in the 60s ...
