Sea Shepherd captain skips bail in Germany

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/germany/9429878/Sea-Shepherd-captain-skips-bail-in-Germany.html

The US-based Sea Shepherd group said Paul Watson had left Germany for an "undisclosed location". It is thought the captain, who handed his passport over to German authorities when he was arrested in May, may have exploited the Schengen zone to travel to France or the Low Countries.

German authorities detained Captain Watson following a request from Costa Rica. The Central American country claimed that his behaviour during an incident on the high seas in 2002 had threatened the safety of the crew of a Costa Rican fishing vessel.

The Sea Shepherd has also been involved in number of violent confrontations with Japanese whaling vessels, and last year three members of its crew were held on board a Japanese ship after boarding it to deliver a letter protesting against the whale hunt.

Susan Hartland, Sea Shepherd's administrative director, confirmed that the 61-year-old captain had fled, but said she did not know where. "We have no further information and are not in touch with him. We will do our best to provide more details as we learn more." A German court announced that since the anti-whaling campaigner disappearance the extradition process against him had been restarted, explaining that "Watson has shown he cannot justify the trust placed in him".

Of course this was always going to happen - he's afraid of being extradited to Japan. Another country he's unwelcome in, he's gotta be careful.
