I'm so happy for you
You might think I'm crazy but I'm really disheartened by what you're undergoing and by the pitiful show Trump is offering to the world. Making your country, which enlightened the world for decades a worldwide laughing stock
I was on pins and needles all night. No matter, only the final result count
Alas, chocolates and champaign are just virtual, I hope I will meet for real some of you in a near future

How things are going in GB ?
I'm not following too closely. Brexit makes me clim the wall !!!
Trump + Brexit + that dumb Puidgemont (as if Brexit was not enough...), it is too much for my sanity...I won't finish in an asylum tied in a straightjacket.
I will probably travel to London this summer. My son lives there.
LeftishBrit
(41,205 posts)Very dominated by Brexit; as I put it, many countries have undergone economic sanctions but we seem to be the first to vote to impose economic sanctions on ourselves. And a lot of semi-fascist nonsense about how we must all accept the Will of the People (just over half the people, of whom some would have envisaged a 'Norway' situation of remaining in the single market, and some would have not felt strongly about the EU but just wanted to get rid of Cameron and Osborne). We 'Remoaners' are often accused of being 'anti-democratic', but there are IMO few things more anti-democratic than the idea that one vote = 'that's it for all time, and no one must ever try to change things'. Unfortunately, most of Labour including Corbyn are being incredibly weak on the subject.
The latest nightmare here is the Salisbury poisoning episode.
If we leave the EU, we will be increasingly dependent on the world's strongmen: a kleptocratic Godfather type, whose friends are willing, among much else, to poison their enemies on our soil, and thereby risk the lives of all nearby; a xenophobic psychopathic clown, who governs by Twitter and wants a trade war with everyone; and an ultra-authoritarian dictator, who has just got the rules changed so he can be president for life. And none of them great on product safety and consumer protection.
Where does your son work? I grew up in London.
Where do you live in Belgium? I was at a conference in Leuven not long ago. I thought it was a lovely place!

(5,101 posts)That "Brexit" kills me !!!
I'm almost sure, you will not leave EU (which is very good), but what a waste of time and money !!!
We had a unique chance to build something fantastic and then, came the idiotic confederacy of haters...(Farrage, Le Pen, Wilders, Puidgemont,...)
I live in Charleroi, in the French part of the country. Leuven is a great place, yes. It has a rich history too.
I have to ask my son, he were in Manchester before. He has a computer science degree. Originally, he wanted to move to the US and apply for a MBA in business management, but go figure why, he changed his mind...

(11,563 posts)I live in Canada, and like most, near the 49th Parallel. Unlike most, though, a little south of the 49th. If I stand on my roof, I can see the United States - the Olympic Mountains, across the Juan de Fuca.
I don't fear for physical safety, but I do feel the underpinnings of society being hammered and yanked on.
On edit: No pun intended.

(66,316 posts)You live in Victoria, I'm guessing.
My wife and I want to move there.
We have a daydream about buying a house that overlooks the Strait of Juan De Fuca. We like the idea of being able to look back into the country that we called home, but are losing our affinity for...
BobTheSubgenius
(11,563 posts)It is a beautiful place, for sure. As much as my wife wants to move to the mainland, I've had my fill of it. Lived in Vancouver for 20+ years.
Certainly, you would be welcome here, at least to me and the people I know. I can't imagine more than a handful having a problem...and that would mostly be about people arriving here and driving up housing prices. (average single-family house in Greater Victoria is $850K, currently)
I can't even imagine what the price of an ocean view might be, and I'm not going to depress myself by checking.
Aristus
(66,316 posts)But a guy can dream.
Perhaps a more practical dream is buying a house in the neighborhood of Craigdarroch Castle. We used to wander around down there a lot during our early visits to Victoria. I expect even those relatively small houses go for a huge price, but not as much as a house with a view of the water.
BobTheSubgenius
(11,563 posts)Dream on - it's largely responsible for any progress our society and even our species achieves!
Craigdarroch is a showpiece, no doubt about it. Did you ever see Hatley? It was built by his son, and, while it was a bit of a hike into town in those days, it does have a magnificent view of Esquimalt Lagoon, the Strait and the Olympics. It was a military college for a while, and now it is Royal Roads University.

(8,282 posts)I fear for my safety living in Tucson where open carry is "a thing". I'm disgusted with these red state Americans and don't want to associate with any of them. sadly. I never felt this way before but 45 has brought out the worst in this society. Cheers!

(5,101 posts)...but I suppose it is not simple as democrat. Especially if you lived abroad in countries were Government are very involved in their citizens lives.
As it is probably hard to explain that taxes and a Government involved in many fields of citizens' lives doesn't mean a Dictatorship or communism or whatever.

(19,193 posts)Sometimes it just seems that way when the current "president" opens his mouth. Trump was an experiment for our Democracy. Many people wanted to see how a "businessman" (not a career politician) could run the country. That experiment failed completely. This mistake will not be repeated by the American people, rest assured. Most of us are pretty nice people, and not at all like the xenophobic asshole in the White House.
Thanks again for your heartfelt congratulations.
syringis
(5,101 posts)Needless to say. Trump is un-American.
And I not fond of cliches. I never bought the "Ugly American" stuff. A simple look at your history and the wonderful achievements you made, shows enough how much worthy you are.
