I was in a hurry and posted this in a group I've never been to before. How I got there I have no idea. Deleted and posted here.

HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, Newfoundland, July 25 (UPI) -- It hasn't been confirmed yet, but searchers believe they've found a World War II German submarine at the bottom of a Canadian river, 60 miles from the ocean.
What appears to be a German U-boat was first spotted at the bottom of the Churchill River in Labrador two years ago by searchers using sonar to locate three men who had gone over Muskrat Falls, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Wednesday.
"We were looking for something completely different, not a submarine, not a U-boat -- I mean, no one would ever believe that was possible," Brian Corbin told the CBC. "It was a great feeling when we found it."
Corbin said the object appears to be a 150-foot-long vessel.

(17,175 posts)It's not surprising. There were several missions into Canadian waters and up the St. Lawrence, for purposes as diverse as mining, putting ashore agents and saboteurs, and picking up escaped POWs. (none of the latter worked; the only successful POW escape from Canada was via Mexico, although we can quibble about whether Leutnant Walter Manhard's escape was "successful" as well.
This boat might be U-857, which was operating in the area at the end of the war and whose fate has never been determined. No U-boat has ever been reported sunk in the Churchill river.

It would be fascinating to find out what caused the thing to crap out in the middle of the river--and to learn if the crew was even still inside.
malthaussen
(17,175 posts)Presumably the crew are still inside, or there would be some report on the sinking -- provided that this sonar image is, in fact, a missing U-Boat. I confess I am not the best at interpreting side-scan sonar images, but there does seem to be the ghost of a u-boat there. I would like to know how it got there.

When it comes to remains, even if all that is left is a tooth, the SOP is to bury that tooth with the appropriate uniform of the deceased.

There are still service personnel from Vietnam who remain MIA, too, FWIW. We are not done there by a long shot: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57446412/vietnam-oks-wider-search-for-u.s-mia/

Confusious
(8,317 posts)But most are found intact.
They found an American sub in the gulf of Thailand a few years back, and it was intact.
I guess it could happen.
malthaussen
(17,175 posts)... so if that was what happened, a portion could have been flattened and not show up on the sonar. Provokingly, the article does not say how far down the purported sub is -- although it can't be many fathoms, since it is on the bottom of a river -- but I'd like to at least see some divers go check it out.

(2,289 posts)To warn people of the coming Germans? Perhaps, except the book is set before WWII. However I think it could still be the reason for the green light, after all my theory of the book is that Gatsby is a whale.
That's right, he is fixated on the light becasue he has to swin by it on the way to his own parties. Now, why would no one notice that Gatsby is an Orca (yes, I know they are technically dolphins) is still beyond me, but that is my theory of the deep hidden meaning and I'm sticking to it.
As to the side scan sonar image, I can't make anything out of it other than I see a monster with a big black cape. Perhaps it is an image of Gatsby.

(37,449 posts)BOSTON Divers have discovered a World War II-era German submarine nearly 70 years after it sank under withering U.S. attack in deep waters off Nantucket.
The U-550 was found on Monday by a seven-man group, some of whom have been searching for the lost U-boat for several years.
It was the second trip in two years to the site by the team of divers, who were led by New Jersey lawyer Joe Mazraani. He said the group used sonar to locate the wreck in deep water about 70 miles south of Nantucket. The divers photographed the U-550 and Mazraani said a return trip is planned.
In April 1944, the U-550 torpedoed an Allied gasoline tanker, but was fatally damaged by depth charges from an escort vessel. Forty-four Germans were killed and 25 aboard the tanker died.
