My wife and daughter are on lockdown. UPDATE

Update 2 - it was a swatting hoax. If I catch the miscreant responsible, he or she will be drinking his or her meals for a few weeks.

Update - the all clear has been issued for my daughter.

My wife works at Northwestern University, and our 2 year old daughter is in day care very close by.

Shots were reported on the NU campus, so theyíre both on lockdown. Latest reports suggest it may be a false alarm, but theyíre treating it as though itís not.

Iím not liking this.

Remind me how having guns in classrooms is supposed to be a good thing?

5. A couple stories running on this now

Police find no evidence of a gunman after Northwestern University locks down, warns about gunman on campus
by Susan Svrluga March 14 at 4:40 PM

Northwestern University warned people on campus to seek shelter Wednesday because of reports of a person with a gun on the Evanston, Ill., campus.

But shortly after 4 p.m., the Evanston Police Department posted on social media there was no evidence of a gunman or victim.

8. My college was on lock down yesterday morning

When I got there at 7:15, there were two fire trucks, an ambulance, and two police cars. A notice came over the loudspeaker about how everyone in the buildings had to evacuate. Of course, it was so early no one was there yet, but still it was scary hearing it.

Turned out to be a false alarm, but it was still scary. You never know, and neither the cops nor the firemen were forthcoming with new information. I can understand how it would be a lot scarier if it was your wife and small daughter who were under lockdown!

11. Weird coincidence

Iíve been going to a few classes at my local community college - and we had a lockdown drill yesterday. Both of my kids also had a lockdown drill at their elementary school yesterday as well.

Itís a sad state of affairs when this is a reality that we have to contend with.

20. There was evidently a suspicious substance

I went by to have a look. If I had to guess, it was a food wrapper. But the firemen and cops took it very seriously.

You know everyone is now on high alert. We don't want to admit it to ourselves, but it's true. We can joke about it and act like we aren't afraid, but deep down we know there is something terribly wrong.

12. In the 1970s still debts sometimes called bomb threats in to universities during

finals week to get exams postponed. At our school some classes actually set up alternate exam sites so exams would still be held in case of a bomb threat. That seemed to work, because the threats stopped.

21. Yes, because you would be able to see it playing out with your own eyes

I thought about calling my wife to tell her, but decided against it because it would just worry her.

23. Agreed.

That, and iíve worked at my university for 18 years. I know where to go if I have to hide or get out. My wife has worked at hers for less than 2 months.

9. That must be utterly terrifying

Itís one thing to be in a situation like that yourself, but to have your wife and child in it..... words escape me.

I know I could handle being faced with that danger, but the thought of someone I love facing it, terrifies to the end.

Iím glad it was just a hoax, but I completely understand the feelings you went through.

10. Swatting can kill

and if so, it should result in felony murder charges.

15. It should be a felony regardless.

There were helicopters all over Evanston when I went to pick up my daughter. That costs serious dough, and they might have been needed elsewhere.

That, and it disrupted several thousand lives.

14. Probably not a good time for the NRA to tweet a picture of an assault rifle.

But we'd be wrong. They chose today to do that.

17. Seems like you've never had a loved one in lock-down or had to deal with the feelings.

Or the cost to taxpayers and health and disrupted plans and schedules.

Thread is appropriate.

And the "threat" existed. That it didn't turn into an active shooter or a shooting or a suspicious carry does not deny that lots of people felt threatened.

Oh. You seem to be denying anything happened.

18. Maybe because his wife and daughter were on lock down

If you've ever been in an active shooter lock down (which I have), you'd realize whether it ends up "real" or not doesn't matter. The fear, anxiety, chaos, etc. are real and never forgotten....
