A lawyer for the Trump Organization downplayed reports that special counsel Robert Mueller had subpoenaed the company for documents, saying it has been cooperating with the investigation and calling the revelation old news.
Since July 2017, we have advised the public that the Trump Organization is fully cooperative with all investigations, including the Special Counsel, and is responding to their requests, Alan Futerfas, a lawyer for the company, said in a statement. This is old news and our assistance and cooperation with the various investigations remains the same today.
The New York Times reported Thursday that Mueller had subpoenaed the Trump Organization. The subpoena covered documents related to Russia and other matters Mueller is investigating, according to the Times. It is not known why Mueller issued subpoenas instead of simply requesting the documents from the company.
The action is the clearest sign yet of a growing special counsel investigation that could be creeping into Trumps business empire, which is presently run by his two adult sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr.
Trump has previously said that Mueller would be crossing a red line if his investigation expanded beyond Russian meddling into his private business dealings. The White House on Thursday declined to address whether Trump viewed the latest development as going beyond the scope of the investigation.
