*U.S. officials warn of attacks, including on nuclear plants
*Cyber-attacks underway since at least March 2016, U.S. says
Russian hackers are conducting a broad assault on the U.S. electric grid, water processing plants, air transportation facilities and other targets in rolling attacks on some of the countrys most sensitive infrastructure, U.S. government officials said Thursday.
The announcement was the first official confirmation that Russian hackers have taken aim at facilities on which hundreds of millions of Americans depend for basic services. Bloomberg News reported in July that Russian hackers had breached more than a dozen power plants in seven states, an aggressive campaign that has since expanded to dozens of states, according to a person familiar with the investigation.
"Since at least March 2016, Russian government cyber actors" have targeted "government entities and multiple U.S. critical infrastructure sectors," including those of energy, nuclear, water and aviation, according to an alert issued Thursday by the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Critical manufacturing sectors and commercial facilities also have been targeted by the ongoing "multi-stage intrusion campaign by Russian government cyber actors."

Thread started Apr16 w/ reason Ryblovlev went to NC. 1. Russia has access to US Electric Grid. 2. Now they have malware to hack it.
1Mar17: Trump's 2018 budget➡️40% cut to Electric Grid cybersecurity. 2May17: Russia hacks US nuclear facilities. 3Today: Still 40% cut.

(1,009 posts)outages monthly, sometimes every two weeks...for the past yr. im in NY. Keep wondering if it has something to do with this. Power co. said they'd do an investigation, and I never heard from them.
They would give me a list of reasons why, such as accidents into poles, except it doesnt fly, because I literally live one block from the fire dept. and never hear the siren going off. 🤷?♀️ The outage doesnt last that long, so its logical its some kind of circuit breaker. Not enough time for a crew to get there and fix it.
This news came out a while ago though. Just under the radar.

(16,420 posts)The Trump administration accused Russia on Thursday of engineering a series of cyberattacks that targeted American and European nuclear power plants and water and electric systems, and could have sabotaged or shut power plants off at will.
United States officials and private security firms saw the attacks as a signal by Moscow that it could sabotage the Wests critical facilities in the event of a conflict.
They said the strikes accelerated in late 2015, at the same time the Russian interference in the American election was underway. The attackers successfully compromised North American and European energy operators by spring 2017, after President Trump was inaugurated.
In the following months, according to a Department of Homeland Security report issued on Thursday, Russian hackers made their way to machines with access to critical control systems at unidentified power plants.
The Russian-backed hackers never went so far as to sabotage or shut down the computer systems that guide the operations of the plants. Still, new computer screenshots released by the Department of Homeland Security made clear that Russian state hackers had the foothold they would have needed to manipulate or shut down power plants.

(19,224 posts)I was just looking at a solar-powered battery backup for the house today. Later I was working in my homemade greenhouse to start seedlings for my 1200 sq.ft. garden near my 25-bird chicken shed that gives me 50+ eggs per week and massive amounts of compost.
