AP FACT CHECK: Trump and the attack of the bowling balls

WASHINGTON — The suspense hung over the public square for hours. Were Japanese regulatory authorities really dropping bowling balls on American cars as part of a dark plot to keep the autos out of the Japanese market?

No, the White House acknowledged. That story was just President Donald Trump being Trump.

This past week, he shed new light on what it means when he is just being himself. At the same event where he spun the bowling ball tale, he told a different story. It was about how he engaged Canada's prime minister in a discussion about trade and, finding himself short on information, made some up. It was a rare acknowledgment that he'll wing it on facts.

A look at a variety of his recent statements and their veracity:

TRUMP, on how Japanese authorities stopped a U.S. car from being approved for sale in their country: "They were ready to approve it and they said, 'No, no, we have to do one more test.' It's called the bowling ball test. Do you know what that is? That's where they take a bowling ball from 20 feet up in the air and they drop it on the hood of the car. And if the hood dents, then the car doesn't qualify. Well, guess what? The roof dented a little bit, and they said, 'Nope, this car doesn't qualify.' It's horrible, the way we're treated." — remarks to closed Missouri fundraiser Wednesday, leaked to The Washington Post and other organizations.

THE FACTS: That "test" didn't happen. "He's joking about this particular test," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday.

In other words Trump's words don't mean shit. But then we already knew that.

The "fact checking" would be when something truthful slipped out, and that would be both rare and newsworthy

Flatter him. Show him a good time. Offer him some personal gain. Take what you can get since he has no business negotiating skills and is clueless to anything beyond his own pocketbook.

That is why the GOP loves him. They get to destroy programs and departments they have eager to destroy for years and all they have to do is flatter him, let him accept bribes and use tax payaer money to fund his properties and business ventures, support his kids and former mistresses and current eye candy, let him golf, give him a twitter account, and throw him an occasional parade/celebration in his honor with full media attention.

And that should be the takeaway across the country: buy Japanese cars because they have more stringent tests.

A few years ago, we got lots of little dents in a hail storm that totaled hundreds of cars (some of them my friends) just southeast of us. Granted we missed the worst, but she was still dimpled. I must say, the dealership did an amazing job of taking all the damage out. It's incredible what they can do.
