UPDATE: Two men seriously injured in single Southwest Austin explosion

9:30 p.m. update: Two men in their 20s have been hospitalized with serious injuries following an explosion in the 4800 block of Dawn Song Drive in Southwest Austin. Officials said their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Officials said there was only one explosion. An earlier report said there also had been a blast on Eagle Feather Drive.

Residents in the immediate area of Dawn Song Drive are being asked so stay in their homes and to follow instructions given by police.

The incident came on the same day that interim Police Chief Brian Manley called on whoever is responsible for a recent string of deadly package bombings at East Austin homes to come forward and share their “message.” Those attacks killed two people and seriously injured an elderly woman.

Especially if it were not delivered by a standard service. Just saying, maybe bomb-makers messed up. Are the 2 males black or white?

when they road past it. Police think the explosion was triggered by a tripwire and are telling people to stay indoors.

They would not be the first to blow themselves up while building their next device.

If not then i hope these two injured people recover quickly.

weren't involved in making the bomb(s).

This bomb was set to go off with a tripwire, which seems to be an increase in the sophistication of the device and an escalation in that the victims could not have been specifically targeted. This suggests that the bomb maker is refining his technique as makes more devices. Maybe he's planning for something much bigger.

19. The two victims in the Dawn Song bombing are 'Anglo males'

If Sunday’s blast is connected to the three bombs that have killed two Austin residents and injured two others since March 2, it would mark a geographic widening of the bomber’s targets. The first three bombs were east of Interstate 35 and hit black or Hispanic residents. The first two victims, 39-year-old Anthony Stephan House and 17-year-old Draylen Mason, are connected to two prominent African-American families with ties to an East Austin church and long histories fighting for racial justice and empowerment of the city’s African-American community. The third bomb hit a Latina resident and her mother in Montopolis.

For many worried Austinites, the bombings raised the specter that someone was targeting minority residents and police have said they are probing the family connections between the victims.

Manley appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America” early Monday and confirmed that the two victims in the Dawn Song bombing as “two Anglo males.”

Fred Burton, a security and terrorism analyst at Austin-based Stratfor, said he thinks it is possible that the suspect has shifted his approach — and potentially the kind of explosive material being used — in order to continue to elude authorities and to continue to strike fear in neighborhoods.
